Ever wondered how massive boulders get stacked on top of each other? Here's the legend of Boulder Island.

Boulder Island is a remote and unspoiled little paradise located 85 km west of the mainland of Thailand and Myanmar. This enchanting island is home to just one resort, the boutique Boulder Bay Eco Resort, where guests can enjoy this hidden gem's untouched beauty and tranquillity. The island is famed for its pristine beaches and azure waters and its mysterious stacked boulders, which have puzzled visitors for centuries.

Legend has it that long ago, Boulder Island was home to a colony of giant hermit crabs constantly searching for the perfect shell. One particularly inventive crab named Hermy had a brilliant idea: why settle for ordinary shells when you could live under a boulder?

Hermy and his friends began collecting the large boulders scattered about the island, using their massive claws to stack them into elaborate and towering formations. The crabs competed to see who could create the tallest, most impressive stack, hoping to claim the best "boulder home."

The island soon became dotted with towering boulder stacks, each proving the ingenuity and competitive spirit of the giant hermit crabs. Hermy's stack was the tallest of them all, earning him the title of King of the Boulders. His stack still stands in the shallow turquoise waters of Boulder Bay, where the Boulder Bay Eco Resort now welcomes adventurers who want to get away from mass tourism in other destinations.

Today, visitors marvel at the stacked boulders, giggling at the thought of giant hermit crabs and their peculiar choice of stone
homes. The playful spirit of Hermy and his friends lives on, adding a touch of magic to the serene beauty of Boulder Island.

In April I had the opportunity to embark on a multi-day Island Safari aboard the cosy Sea Gipsy boat, and it was an experience of a lifetime! Exploring the pristine and unspoiled islands of the Mergui (Myeik) Archipelago, located west of Thailand and Myanmar, felt like stepping into a paradise untouched by time. At the end of the journey, I spent a few days at the boutique Boulder Bay Eco Resort on the remote Boulder Island with its 8 secluded beaches—no roads, no roaring boats, shops, no mass tourism here.

Our journey took us to some of the most remote and untouched islands, where we immersed ourselves in the serenity and splendour of nature. Whether snorkelling among vibrant coral reefs, relaxing on secluded beaches, or experiencing the culture of the Moken "Sea Gypsy" people, every moment was filled with wonder and excitement. More about this in the December 2024 issue of GlobeRovers Magazine. In the meantime, you can check out this website and book your trip. You will never regret it. https://islandsafarimergui.com/

Next week I am returning to Boulder Bay Eco Resort on Boulder Island, 85 km west of Myanmar and Thailand. First I will board the resort's Sea Gipsy boat for a cruise among the islands. You may wonder why I am once again going to this remote island... See the COMMENTS SECTION for 20 of the best reasons. Rather than vacationing at the CROWDED beaches of Thailand, come to explore this little private island with no roads and no villages. On your way to the island, stay a few days at the cosy Victoria Cliff Hotel & Resort in Kawtaung, just across the river from Ranong, Thailand.

Rising from the azure waves like a golden sentinel, these boulders are standing guard over an untouched tropical island. This serene sunset photo hopefully captures the untouched essence of the remote Boulder Island, located in the outer reaches of the Myeik Archipelago of southern Myanmar, west of Thailand. These monumental rock formations are seamlessly balanced in harmony with the white sands and translucent shallows, untouched by modernity’s footprints. There are few places on earth in easy reach which remains so untouched by mass tourism as the islands of the Myeik Archipelago. I will continue to explore this region and introduce you to these beautiful spots on earth. Read all about this region in the Dec issue of GlobeRovers magazine, available very soon. :)

NEW BLOG-POST: Yemen – Where Time Stands Still.
Such an amazing country but sadly it is pretty much off-limits right now.

In our first part of four posts about Yemen, we look at its history and the fascinating travels through the country in the early 19th century by Freya Stark.

One of the most exhilarating places I have ever photographed:

Sana'a, capital of Yemen and one of the oldest continuously-inhabited cities in the world. A besieged city living in a time-warp. Join us and go back in time!
