Bali From a Rural Perspective (Follow-Up #3)

Most visitors see Bali through beach clubs, resorts and busy tourist streets. A few kilometres inland, it’s a different world.

Early mornings in rural Bali are often my favourite time of day. As the sun begins to rise over the rice fields, the landscape feels calm and unhurried, offering a moment for quiet reflection before the day begins.

Rice fields stretch across the landscape, farmers work by hand, and village life moves at a slower pace.

Bali was built on agriculture long before tourism. The subak irrigation system has supported communities for centuries and remains part of daily life.

One of the things I enjoy most about living here is being reminded that Bali is far more than the places you see on postcards.

What’s your favourite rural area of Bali?

A visit to Kevala Ceramics today and a reminder that good craftsmanship still takes time.

I made a reel showing the artisans shaping, glazing and finishing the plates, bowls, cups and saucers by hand. Watching the process properly gives you a different appreciation for the final product. What looks simple on a café table has usually passed through a lot of skilled hands first.

There’s something quite calming about seeing people focused entirely on one craft. A bit different from the pace of modern life and probably more satisfying than another day staring at emails.

Have you ever watched ceramics being made up close before?

Hidden in Plain Sight 9

Buddha statues are everywhere in Bali 🙂

Outside shops, hidden in gardens, watching over small streets and tucked between tropical plants. After a while you almost stop noticing them.

Today I slowed down on my walk to the cigar club and actually looked properly. The detail, the expressions, the way nature slowly takes them back over time.

Easy to miss when you’re rushing past.

What’s something you pass every day but rarely stop to look at?

Hidden in Plain Sight 8

I’ve walked to the cigar club countless times and barely noticed the statues along the way.

Today I actually stopped.

Weathered faces, cracked stone, details in the carving you miss when you’re focused on getting somewhere else. Funny how slowing down for thirty seconds changes what you see.

Photography does that. It teaches you to look properly instead of just passing through.

How many things do we walk past every day without really seeing them?
