The night before Nyepi, the Balinese Hindu New Year, the Ogoh Ogoh come alive on the streets of Bali.
They are the physical, externalised forms of the Bhuta Kala — chaotic, negative, imbalanced forces in the universe. They give shape to what swirls invisibly around us. Fear, anger, greed, chaos.
It’s wild. Frightening effigies, meticulously crafted by each banjar, paraded through the streets, then shaken and spun at junctions to draw out negative energies for destruction. It’s a loud, chaotic surge of noise, music, and dance, on the night before everything turns completely the opposite.
At 6:00am, for 24 hours, Nyepi begins. The first day of the Balinese New Year. The day of silence.
For 24 hours, no one leaves their home. No lights are allowed at night. No work, travel, or entertainment. Even the airport shuts down.
The island goes dark and quiet for a collective reset.
The intention is spiritual. To cleanse the island of negative energy, and begin the new year in balance.
Today, 19 March 2026, is Nyepi in Bali.
