🐑🌿✨ Leaf sheep magic in Tulamben ✨🌿🐑
📍🌋 Tulamben, Bali, Indonesia | 🌊🔍 Black sand macro paradise with macrospotter and photo assistant

Meet the adorable Costasiella (commonly called the “leaf sheep”) — one of the ocean’s tiniest celebrities.
, it’s actually not a true nudibranch, but a sacoglossan sea slug (still a macro superstar!).

🔬 Why this tiny slug is so fascinating:
🌱 Kleptoplasty: Costasiella can retain chloroplasts from the algae it eats, a remarkable adaptation often described as “borrowing” photosynthetic machinery.
👀 Iconic look: Those “sheep-like” head appendages are rhinophores, used for sensing chemicals in the water.
📏 Micro subject: These sea slugs are tiny, making them a dream challenge for super-macro underwater photography.
🌍 Indo-Pacific favorite: They’re found in tropical waters, including Indonesia, and are especially loved by macro divers and photographers.

This is one of the Indo-Pacific’s most underrated cephalopods: the Mototi Octopus, also known as the Poison Ocellate Octopus. “Mototi” literally refers to poisonous in its local name—an instant reminder to admire, not handle.

🔬 Science bites (the cool stuff):
👁️‍🗨️ Ocelli (false eyes): those iridescent blue “rings” are fake eyespots designed to startle predators and redirect attacks away from the head.
🧠 A master of rapid camouflage: octopuses use chromatophores + skin texture to switch patterns in a blink—perfect for Tulamben’s volcanic mosaic.
🧪 Potentially venomous: like several ocellate octopuses, it’s considered potentially toxic, so the rule is simple: look, shoot (photos), don’t touch.
🏠 Behavior: often found tucked into crevices or improvised dens on sandy/rubble bottoms—sometimes surrounded by “decor” (shells and debris).

💬 Your turn:
How would you caption this one—“cute” or “dangerous”? And… did you spot the ocelli immediately or only after zooming in? 👀

Flabellina sp. (Nudibranchia, Aeolidida) — Tulamben, Bali
With macro spotter and photo assistant!

Observed in Tulamben’s volcanic reef-rubble habitat, this Flabellina sp. represents a classic aeolid nudibranch morphotype, characterized by elongated oral tentacles, lamellate rhinophores, and multiple dorsal cerata arranged in clusters.

From a biological perspective, aeolids are highly relevant for:
• Prey specialization: many species feed selectively on hydrozoans/cnidarians.
• Kleptocnidae: sequestration of functional nematocysts from prey into cnidosacs at ceratal tips, contributing to antipredator defense.
• Aposematism: conspicuous coloration that may function as a warning signal in chemically defended taxa.
• Taxonomic complexity: external similarity among Indo-Pacific “Flabellina-like” forms frequently requires integrative taxonomy (morphology + molecular markers) for species-level resolution.

📍🌴 Location: Tulamben, Bali, Indonesia
🌊🐚 Habitat: Volcanic sand + reef rubble

Meet Tulamben’s tiniest trickster 🐸🐟🎨
This tiny painted frogfish (Antennarius pictus) was the ultimate hide-and-seek champion on the black sand slopes of Tulamben, Bali. 🇮🇩

Thanks to macrospotter and photo assistant for all your help!

A few fun facts to make it even cooler:
• It’s an anglerfish relative that “fishes” with a little lure (called the esca) on its head to attract prey.
• It doesn’t really swim much — it walks on modified fins like little hands.
• The “painted” look isn’t just for style: it can change colors/patterns to match sponges, algae, or rubble… and vanish in plain sight.

🌿 Stiliger ornatus — a tiny “walking sea-forest” in Tulamben

At first glance it looks like a drifting leaf… but it’s a nudibranch. Those feathery cerata aren’t just pretty: they help with breathing, defense, and camouflage among algae and hydroids.

📍 Tulamben, Bali
📸 Macro tip: shoot slightly from the side to make the “branches” pop—slow movements and patience pay off.

Thanks to the best macrospotter and photography assistant! 👀✨

Epicenter of Marine Biodiversity – Raja Ampat is part of the Coral Triangle, home to more than 75% of the world’s known coral species and over 1,500 species of reef fish, making it the richest marine ecosystem on the planet. Highest Coral Species Count – Scientists have recorded over 550 species of hard coral in Raja Ampat, more than anywhere else in the world. This surpasses even the Caribbean, which has fewer than 70 species.

Halgerda batangas is a species of dorid nudibranch (a marine gastropod mollusk) belonging to the family Discodorididae. First described in 1993 by Carlson & Hoff, it is part of a group of nudibranchs known for their striking body patterns and distinctive raised tubercles on the dorsal surface. These vibrant sea slugs are often encountered by divers across the Indo-Pacific, especially in coral reef habitats. Below are some key scientific details and interesting facts about Halgerda batangas.

Amphiprion clarkii (Clark’s anemonefish) taking care of the eggs.

• The female selects a spawning site near the base of their host anemone.
• The male prepares the site by cleaning it thoroughly, removing algae and debris to ensure the eggs adhere properly.
The female lays between 300 and 1,000 eggs in a single spawning event, attaching them to the substrate with adhesive filaments.

Unlike many marine fish, the male is the primary caretaker of the eggs.He actively aerates the eggs by fanning them with his fins and removes any that are infertile or affected by fungus.

Female argonaut on jellyfish

The paper nautilus, also known as an Argonaut (genus Argonauta), isn’t actually a true nautilus—it’s a type of pelagic octopus. Here are a few fascinating facts about them:
1. The “paper” shell:
Only female paper nautiluses create the characteristic paper-thin egg case—often mistaken for a shell. Unlike the hard, permanent shells of true nautiluses, these egg cases are secreted by special glands near the female’s arms. They serve as a brood chamber for eggs and also provide some buoyancy.
2. Extremely delicate:
The egg case looks fragile (like paper), but it is surprisingly sturdy for its purpose. If you ever come across one washed ashore, it’s easy to see why early collectors were enthralled by how light and fragile it appears.
3. Dramatic size difference:
Male and female paper nautiluses look radically different. Females can grow several inches long (with the egg case sometimes exceeding the body size), while males are only about the size of a marble and lack the ability to produce a shell.
