Just a bit of a staccato stroll in the concrete jungle known as New York City. I remember coming here as a college student, in awe of high-rise after high-rise, blocking out light and casting shadows. Not much has changed, not much at all. The city thrives on re-creating itself. That’s part of the continuity you can expect in any of the neighborhoods every few blocks. I am always admiring and in love with the architecture, which is constantly changing, adjusting to the position of the old buildings that still stand in all their glory.

Your POV: Color or Black and White?

The grittiness of Chicago’s downtown really rings true in the heat, humidity, and thick air, especially among over 140 elevated train stops.
This particular location is found in the downtown Loop area. Easy to get around from point to point, the commonly called “L” operates on the track lines easily identified by the faded colors on the signs bolted into cement. Recognized as having the “best 100 days of summer,” this city will always stay true to itself for the curious and the locals.

Sometimes it’s fun to grab that iPhone, capturing in-portrait candid last moments. These are tulips I planted in late fall and are in the last days of showing off for Spring. Because I love black and white plus stark contrast, it was pretty easy to frame/crop and exaggerate blooms opening their petals.

A few of NYC’s fixed and rooted everyday human and non-human inhabitants you’ll see unexpectedly at every turn. Some make you query for a quick, unanticipated portrait, and others are precious cargo making their way from one neighborhood to another. To me, New York will always remain the same, welcoming, exciting, and offering itself despite its big-city challenges. I still love being here whenever I get the chance. For me, the more I participate, the more I experience. This city makes my heart soar and pumps me full of adrenaline found nowhere else.

I caught this most dramatic Amtrak conductor in an “I love my job” set of moments at the East Brunswick stop recently going from Penn Station/NYC to Union Station/DC. She never said a word, but you knew she was a keeper of a tight on-time schedule. Her cap pin stated the obvious: “I’ll get over it. Just gotta be dramatic first.” Priceless.

This Metro cop came across tough at first glance. But the way she leaned so nonchalantly against the closed double doors of the fast-moving car rollicking down the track, spelling out specifically “ PLEASE DO NOT LEAN ON DOOR,” was a humorous juxtaposition in its own right. She seemed a bit intimidating. But then somebody pointed out the signage, and the intimidation softened into a smile. Good folks in DC. Really good.

I waited months after signing up for this Washington, DC workshop; I took it a week ago with Leica Akademie photographer Phil Penman, based in New York City. He is a global ambassador for Leica camera 📷 with his workshops filling up in the blink of an eye! I’ve taken a number of his workshops already and always consider myself so fortunate when I secure a spot. While these quick snaps are taken with an iPhone 16 Pro Max, I traipsed around Washington, DC, for hours on end over the weekend with my Leica M EV1 35 mm, honing my skills. For me, photography is a constant mindset, always a daily discipline, whether I'm shooting outdoors or editing indoors. It will continue to be a never-ending practice and way of life that I never see ending.

Your expertise, hit-the-streets-running at all hours, knowledge, kindness, and nonjudgmental attitude toward photographers at all levels participating in your workshops are key factors why you continue to gain momentum as one of the greats in the world of photography.
