The last Sunday in July is known in Ireland as Bilberry Sunday, Garland Sunday, or Reek Sunday. Traditionally, this day was celebrated with pilgrimages to hilltops and holy wells. The most popular annual pilgrimage still takes place at Ireland's holy mountain Croagh Patrick, aka "the Reek", in Co. Mayo, in honour of St. Patrick who spent 40 days fasting on top of the mountain.

The view from Slieve na Calliagh (Irish: Sliabh na Caillí, meaning 'the hag's mountain'), overlooking the megalithic burial site known as Loughcrew in Co. Meath.
The hills here are named after the Cailleach, the old woman symbolising wisdom in Irish mythology. The megalithic graveyard dates back to the 4th millenium BC and is one of the most important ancient sites in Ireland.
