🎅🔨 The magic might happen in December… but the work starts long before it.

There’s a lot that families never see behind Santa’s Grotto Donegal.

The planning. The props. The signs. The set. The little ideas scribbled down that might eventually become part of a child's Christmas experience. 🎄

And this year, I'm putting a huge amount of thought into every little detail.

Some ideas will work. Some will probably change completely before December 😂 — but that's part of creating it.

I don't want families simply walking into a room to meet Santa.

I want that moment when the children arrive to feel like they've stepped into Christmas. ✨

There’s still plenty to do…

But bit by bit, Christmas 2026 is starting to come together. 🎅❤️

Photos from Ireland are delighted to be Santa's Grotto Donegal official photographer this Christmas in the Wesley Hall in Carndonagh.

🎅✨ THE MAGIC STARTS LONG BEFORE DECEMBER…

People see the finished Santa’s Grotto at Christmas.

What they don’t see are the months of thinking, planning, changing ideas and working out all those little details beforehand. 🎄

That’s where I am right now with Santa’s Grotto Donegal 2026.

Thinking about the set.
The signs.
The lighting.
The photographs.
The little touches the children will notice.

And asking myself one question over and over…

“What can I do this year to make it even more magical?” ❤️

Because when a child eventually walks through that door and sees Santa, they won't know about any of this preparation.

They'll just see Christmas. 🎅✨

And that's exactly how it should be.

There’s a lot happening between now and December — and I’ll bring you along as it all starts to come together. 🎄❤️

📸 Some photographs become more valuable with every year that passes.

Looking back through these images reminded me why I picked up a camera in the first place.

It was never just about getting everyone to look at the camera and smile.

It was about telling a little story.

A grandfather holding a child close beside an old tractor.

A quiet conversation among the wildflowers.

Walking hand-in-hand along a Donegal beach.

A tiny child discovering what looks like a whole magical world in the woods.

And those little moments between generations that, at the time, can seem so ordinary. ❤️

Years from now, they won't feel ordinary.

The children will have grown up.
People will have changed.
Life will have moved on.

But that photograph will still be there.

That's what I love about photography.

We're not really photographing what something looks like today.

We're preserving something that one day we'll desperately want to remember.

And for me, that's worth far more than simply taking a nice picture.

These are the moments I love photographing. ❤️

Not just the posed photographs. Not just everyone looking at the camera.

The connections. The characters. The stories behind the people.

A child with a much-loved horse.
A young lad proudly standing between two ponies.
Musicians completely lost in the moment.
A grandfather and child sharing a scene that feels like it belongs to another time.

That’s what Photos From Ireland is really about.

I want to create photographs that mean something now, but perhaps mean even more in 10, 20 or 30 years’ time.

Because people grow up. Families change. Animals that were once part of everyday life are remembered. And those ordinary little moments suddenly become incredibly precious.

If there's someone, somewhere, an animal or a part of your family's story that you'd love captured, tell me about it.

It doesn't have to be a special occasion.

🎅 Things are starting to happen behind the scenes at Santa's Grotto Donegal…

There's plenty of work still to do before December, but we're determined to make this year's experience really special for the families who come through our doors.

And we haven't forgotten the four-legged members of the family either. 🐾❤️

Well-behaved pets are very welcome to come along and meet Santa too.

There's a lot more happening over the next few months… and we'll share a little of it as we go. 🎄✨

Others are about the people, the memories and the little moments that happen along the way. ❤️📷

Looking back through some of my older work, these are the photographs that always stop me.

A man sitting by a Donegal roadside with his guitar and faithful companion.

A little girl walking through the autumn colours with her dog.

A quiet portrait on the beach.

A young woman and her best friend.

A little lad beside the river, stick in hand, completely lost in his own adventure.

Nothing forced. Nothing complicated.

Just real people, real characters and real moments in Donegal.

And years later, that's what makes a photograph special. It takes you back to a person, a place and a moment in your life that you might otherwise have forgotten.

That's still what I love most about photography.

📸 One day, these photographs will mean far more than they do today.

That’s something I’ve come to realise after all my years behind a camera.

Children grow up.

Families change.

Holidays become stories we tell.

And those ordinary little moments that didn't seem particularly important at the time can suddenly become the photographs we treasure most. ❤️

That’s why, when I photograph a family or couple, I don't want everyone standing stiffly looking at the camera.

I want the laughs.

The messing about.

The wind blowing your hair everywhere on a Donegal beach.

The kids being themselves.

The little looks between people that happen when they forget I'm even there.

Those are the photographs I love.

This is why I still love photography.

It’s not really about getting everyone to stand in the right place and smile at the camera.

It’s about the people you meet.

The characters.

The children being themselves.

A quiet moment that lasts only a few seconds.

And sometimes… a donkey or an owl decides to become part of the story too. 😊

Over the years I’ve had the privilege of photographing so many people around Donegal and Inishowen, and looking back through some of these photographs reminded me just how many memories are hidden away in my archives.

Some were planned.

Some just happened.

And very often, those are the photographs I love most.
