Welcome to the dark side of photography! 🌌✨

To all the new followers who’ve joined the page recently, welcome! I’m Stefan, a landscape, night sky, and aerial photographer based in Dublin.

My absolute passion is staying up through the early hours of the morning, hauling gear into total darkness, and tracking the cosmos. From hunting the Milky Way over ancient Irish passage tombs to capturing rare displays of the Northern Lights over the coast, I love showing the night sky in ways the naked eye can't quite see.

Headed out around midnight last night to try my hand at drone light painting, heavily inspired by the brilliant work of . With clouds rolling in, it felt like as good a time as any to give it a shot.

Loughshinny is quickly becoming my go-to spot, it’s 10 minutes from home, relatively dark, and most importantly, nice and quiet.

What I didn't account for was that controlling a drone in near pitch-black darkness while trying to use Point of Interest (POI) presets is almost impossible when the sensors can't actually see the subject. Safe to say the Martello tower stood there silently judging every frantic adjustment!

Plenty of lessons learned on this run, but we still came away with a great image to build on.

Stacking the Moon: A long process for a Mac user!

Seeing last night’s beautiful 80% moon reminded me that I’d left a batch of test frames sitting on my hard drive from last month. I’ve wanted to attempt a properly stacked lunar image for a long time, combining multiple frames to smash noise and pull out maximum sharpness.

Last month, I shot around 50 frames on a tripod at 600mm. Research pointed me to the classic lunar workflow: PIPP for alignment, AutoStakkert for stacking, and RegiStax for wavelets sharpening.

My biggest hurdle? All three are Windows-only, and I’m on an M4 Mac. After days of troubleshooting, Claude AI helped me configure Whisky/Wine to run the software smoothly.

The Workflow:
1️⃣ Prepped RAWs in Lightroom (basic exposure/contrast) and exported as TIFFs.
2️⃣ Aligned the frames in PIPP to compensate for the moon drifting across the sensor.
3️⃣ Stacked the best frames in AutoStakkert! into a single master TIFF.
4️⃣ Enhanced contrast and color saturation in Photoshop (plus added background stars for effect).
5️⃣ Final color balance and output polish in Lightroom.

Far from a perfect moon shot, but figuring out the software stack and post-processing pipeline was a massive learning win. Next clear night, I'm going for round two!
