The Tyrconnell Tower is named after the Earl of Tyrconnell, Sir William Talbot who is said to have built the first house of Carton in 1603. Tyrconnell was born in Carton House and was a member of the Talbot family who held the estate throughout the 17th century. The tower was intended to be a mausoleum for his family but was never completed.
