Lafayette Photography at Leopardstown – Irish Champions Festival, 12 September

For Fashion Day at Leopardstown, we will present a luxuriously appointed portrait studio, inspired by the golden age of fashion and classic glamour, designed to celebrate the most stylish patrons of the Irish Champions Festival.

Our photographer will capture every element of your look from hat to heel, creating portraits that highlight the elegance and individuality of your style. Guests will enjoy an exclusive reduced studio offering, with the option to take home a photographic print on the day.

Patrons can access their complete photoshoot online later that evening via the Lafayette Photography website. As Ireland’s longest established portrait studio, crafting distinguished portraits since 1880, Lafayette Photography is proud to bring our signature style and heritage to Leopardstown for this exceptional event.

Lafayette Photography will be located in the Fashion Zone within the Legacy Lounge. Our set was built and designed in house and fresh flowers were provided by Flowers.ie.

The Gresham Hotel on O'Connell Street, then known as Sackville Street, photographed in the early 1900s.

Horse-drawn carts, top hats and one of Dublin's most famous hotels. The Gresham was considered one of the city's grandest addresses and became so synonymous with luxury that Dubliners would often quip, "You're not at the Gresham!" to anyone getting notions.

Originally a row of Georgian townhouses combined into a single hotel. Next door was the business of James W. Mackey, seed merchant and florist, who served as Lord Mayor of Dublin on two occasions.

Both buildings were destroyed during the revolutionary period and rebuilt in the years that followed. The streetscape survived, but some details didn't, including the original "Gresham Hotel" signage carved into the stone façade.

A forgotten fashion powerhouse of Dublin.

This striking High Victorian commercial building, photographed by Lafayette Photography around 1955, was home to Slyne & Co., one of Dublin's leading dressmakers and milliners from 1890 to 1959.

Distinguished by its steeply pitched roof, ornate gablets and terracotta finials, the building was once at the heart of Dublin's fashion trade. Today, dresses bearing the Slyne & Co. label are highly sought-after vintage treasures.

Thankfully, this beautiful building still survives today. Do you know where it is?

We had the absolute delight of meeting and photographing Linda Ervine MBE MRIA, language rights activist, champion of Ulster Irish, and a dedicated supporter of the Gaelic revival.

Linda is the leader of the "Turas" Irish Language Project in East Belfast, which has played a transformative role in promoting and revitalising the Irish language within the community. She was recently appointed to the Council of State, where she advises President Catherine Connolly on matters relating to the Irish language.

We would like to sincerely thank Linda and her team for accommodating us and for agreeing to take part in the Lafayette Photograph Archive Project. It was a privilege to document such an influential figure in Ireland's cultural and linguistic landscape.

Before Kneecap, before CMAT, and long before Bono Ireland had already exported a global superstar.

John McCormack, Athlone’s finest and one of the world’s most celebrated tenors.
Born in June 1884, he sold over 800 recordings in his career, moving effortlessly from opera houses to Irish ballads. At just 23, he became the youngest tenor to sing at Covent Garden. Famed for his flawless diction and seemingly endless breath control, and to top it off he was also a Papal Count.

A Witness to History 📸🕰

From the same balcony on Westmoreland Street, these two images look out over O’Connell Street as Ireland gathers, in very different ways.

In 1932, an extraordinary crowd, nearly a million strong makes its way towards Phoenix Park for the Eucharistic Congress. A moment when Dublin became the centre of a global event.

Fast forward a few decades, and the scene shifts into colour. It’s St Patrick’s Day, around 1960, and O’Connell Street is alive with celebration, energy, and a hint of modern Dublin beginning to emerge.

Standing in both scenes is Nelson’s Column, long before its dramatic end in 1966.

The Lafayette studio balcony was an observer to Dublin's history and a changing Ireland over the decades.

Stealing the spotlight, one small companion who seems perfectly at home among the crew 🐾 A simple photograph, but a nice glimpse into a working world from another time.
