Liberties Photographic Archive

Liberties Photographic Archive Liberties Photographic Archive is managed and founded by Andrew O'Connell from the Liberties. Please feel free to like, share, and comment. Not anymore.

Enjoy the memories that are shared. Like so many photographers I got my photography bug from my grandfather and uncle. They gave me a passion that took years to realise. For many years, I just took it for granted and underrated my own talents and passion. Liberties Photographic Archive serves to collect our history, heritage and culture. The Liberties is my photographic playground. The Liberties,

its people and history are in my DNA. If you would like to talk to me about any project you are thinking about feel free to tag me on Facebook or through social media.

📍 Dublin’s Liberties
Tag the friend who owes you a night out 🍻

The Liberties Dublin’s
most character-filled community 🍻

The Liberties sits just southwest of Dublin city centre and is one of the oldest and most distinctive parts of the city. If you want the real Dublin energy working-class history, proper pubs, street character, and strong local pride this is where you find it.

🧱 The History (why the Liberties feel different)

The Liberties grew outside the medieval walls of Dublin Castle. Because it was technically outside city authority, it developed its own rules and industries.

For centuries it was famous for:

Breweries & distilleries 🍺
Textile mills 🧵
Market trading 🥩
Working-class communities

Huge brewing and whiskey industries were built here, including:
Guinness (still dominates the area)
Roe & Co Teelings Powers Liberties etc

The neighbourhood used to be one of the most densely populated slum areas in Europe in the 1800s, but it also produced some of Dublin’s strongest community identities.

A selection of old inner city Dublin pubs that no longer exist. Lost to the progress of road widening and city development plans over the decades in the Liberties and surrounds.
