Johanna King - Family Photographer Dublin

Johanna King - Family Photographer Dublin Award-winning documentary family photographer & educator based in Dublin, Ireland. I capture (extra)ordinary moments for families both in photographs and video.

When I photograph a family, my ultimate goal is to capture those fleeting moments you want to hold onto and arrange them in a beautiful heirloom album for you to treasure and then transmit to your children. The achievements I take the most pride in are putting little ones and big ones at ease and creating images that couples and families want to enlarge and hang over their sofa.

“I want to print more photos. I just never get around to it.”

The Summer Photo Book Project is a 30-day guided project for busy parents who want to turn their family photos into a finished, printed summer photo book, with simple steps, gentle deadlines and support along the way.

Comment PHOTOBOOK and I’ll send you the details + enrolment link.

Printed photos are the best way to revisit our memories.

Photos aren't meant to stay on phones or hard-drives.

Kids LOVE flicking through albums and photobooks.

And it's very accessible nowadays...

If you want to get your summer photos (or a vacation) into a book for you and your kids to enjoy together, you might be interested in this 30-day photobook project I'm hosting.

We start on the 14th of September. It's €7.

In one month time, you should be able to send your book to print. (And I might even offer to do it for you once you have selected your photos.)

Yes you can do it without my help, but without accountability, these things tend to fall to the bottom of the to-do list.

In case you haven't seen my recent stories, watched my last two reels or listened to my last podcast episode 😂

I'm running this mini-course/group challenge, that will bring you from "I'd love to create a photobook" to actually sending one to print by the middle of October. (That's the goal anyway, if you send it to print later on, you won't be 'failing').

Find the link in bio and don't wait until Sunday 13 at 23h59 to join, please...

I nearly fell to record this video for you 🤣 Caught myself half-way down and hurt my shoulder.

When one of my long-term family photography clients asked me to photograph their beloved holiday home in Kilmore Quay, I didn’t hesitate.

Interior photography couldn’t be more different from documentary family photography, and my brain loves trying different things.

This property is so beautiful that if you’re like me, you will enjoy looking through these photos.

The link to the Airbnb listing is at the end of the article. The view had me tearing up when I drove down the lane. You nearly have a 360º view of the sea from the front of the house.

And if you know someone with a gorgeous rented property who didn’t get professional real estate photos, send this to them. I’m happy to travel (max 2h from Dublin).

Professional photos are known to increase booking rates.

Real is enough. Now is enough. Imperfect beautiful life is worth celebrating and photographing. If not, what are we teaching to our kids? What are we waiting for?

Are you more of a Black & White or Colour person when it comes to photographs?

Interestingly, some photographers use B&W as their default and Colour if it adds to the story.

I like both, but when I deliver a gallery, it will be 85% in colour and 15% in B&W.

B&W sometimes helps draw attention to the subject, especially if there are distracting elements in the frame. B&W can also help with tricky lighting situations.

But at the end of the day, I use it when I feel the pull to. When it makes an image more emotional...

And for the funny story, my daughter, when she was 4 or so, told me she much preferred the photos with their "real colours". I realised that she saw her life in colours, and seeing the photos in B&W didn't feel right to her.

Want something a little different for your newborn photos? No posing, no retouching and no props other than the precious knitted crochet blanket?

Documentary newborn photography might be for you.

No two documentary newborn photo sessions will ever look the same.

Each session is unique to your family unit, your home, your pets, and all the little details that surround your baby. Ex: the colourful handmade crochet blanket.

Follow for more behind-the-scenes.

PS: A big thank you to my clients for supplying cups of coffee/tea and glasses of water. I don't always manage to drink them hot, but it's much appreciated.
