ANIAR. A restaurant unlike any other, and probably the most unusual place I have photographed or dined in. An experience, a theatre, food as art, as culture, as a place. The west of Ireland translated into flavours, textures, seasons. Terroir in its simplest and most exquisite form.

I’m a finalist at this year and received Highly Commended in the Food for Sale category. WHOW. I’m back from London but still buzzing.

With over 9,000 entries from 50 countries and an incredibly high standard, this recognition means a lot. The image is also being exhibited at Mall Galleries in London amongst some of the best food photography currently in the world.

The award-winning image was taken during my travels in India, of a chicken street vendor in Kolkatta. I still remember the impact that scene had on me. The raw reality of where food comes from, and how vastly different daily life looks across the world.

A highlight of the London trip was meeting and in person. Huge congratulations to both of them on their achievements in the competition.

The ceremony host were in a company of and I have to say, he is a true gentleman and an absolute legend. A real pleasure to talk to him.

If you are in London this weekend, the exhibition runs until tomorrow. Well worth a visit.

One of the aspects I enjoy the most about being a food photographer is that I get to travel alot. When I land in a new place, for a shoot or holiday, it’s much easier to learn about the food then you would from any article or documentary, simply by immersing in a local culture, chatting with locals and tasting the regional specialities.
Maybe that’s why Stephens story and his idea for the restaurant Mekong Street Food really hit home. The menu in the restaurant is inspired by South East Asian cuisine, his travel and things he learned from the chefs in Vietnam and Thailand. One of the specials in Mekong is the pork belly, spicy papaya and king prawn salad. Definitely one to try when you are in Derry!
