There's a version of Laos where Vientiane is just the airport you fly into on the way to somewhere prettier. I nearly did that myself. One day changed my mind, mostly because the food alone justified the stop.

There's a version of this journey where everything runs smoothly, and there's the version most people actually get, a minivan transfer, a wait at the harbour, and a boat that leaves roughly whenever it feels like it. I've done this route more than once now.
