I'll be honest, getting to Amed isn't complicated, but it's not quite as simple as the map makes it look. From Denpasar you're looking at a couple of hours minimum, longer with traffic around Sanur or Klungkung, and there's a decision early on about driving yourself or taking a transfer.

I'll be honest, getting from Amed to Gili Trawangan looks simple on paper and is anything but. There's no direct boat from Amed itself, so it's a transfer, timing, and a fair bit of luck with the crossing. I got caught out on my first attempt and lost a night I'd already paid for.

There are three realistic ways to get from the airport to Amed, and I've done all of them at different points. A private transfer's easiest but costs the most, a scooter's cheapest but only makes sense if you're confident riding in Bali traffic, and there's a middle option most people don't know about.

There's no wifi worth relying on across most of Si Phan Don, the local name for the 4000 Islands, and that's genuinely part of the appeal after weeks of city hopping. Hammocks, slow boats between islands, and the Mekong's only waterfall with resident irrawaddy dolphins nearby.

I thought Amed would be a one-night stopover before Gili Trawangan. Ended up staying four. The hotels here aren't flashy, but that's the point, you're paying for a view of Agung rather than an infinity pool with fifty other tourists in it.
