Grennan Castle, Thomastown

Grennan Castle was built by Thomas Fitz Anthony in the 13th Century. Thomas Fitz Anthony son-in-law of Strongbow had been granted a large area of land, originally called Ogenti, the land was renamed by Thomas to Grennan. The townland where the castle is located still maintains that name today, however the village which grew up around the castle gradually became known by the name of its founder 'Thomastown'.

Grennan Castle measures 20 metres x 13 metres and stands 20 metres tall, the walls at their base are 2.5 metres thick. The ground floor contains three barrel vaulted chambers with an entrance to the second floor on the south side by a staircase built hidden into the thickness of the wall. At the top of the staircase is just a gaping opening down to the floor below. This opening was originally covered by a trapdoor, hence with the trapdoor raised the castle was almost impenetrable.

The first floor of the castle contained the great hall, and the second floor reached by a flight of steps in the east wall contained the dormitory area.

In 1650 Cromwell’s troops called to the castle. The siege lasted only two days, the garrison marched out leaving all their weapons behind them and promised to never again oppose English rule.

Grennan Castle survived in good repair until the early 1800s.

Today cattle pass freely through holes in the slowly crumbling castle walls.

Originally built by John (1780-1868) and Robert (1810-81) Mallet of Dublin to designs prepared by Captain William Scarth Moorsom (1804-63) an elegantly-composed viaduct of national importance forms a dramatic landmark rising above the River Nore valley in the outskirts of Thomastown: at the time of completion the viaduct represented the longest single railway bridge span in the British Isles. The construction in refined locally-sourced limestone exhibits the high quality stone masonry expected from artefacts associated with the development of the Waterford and Maryborough [Portlaoise] Branch extension of the Great Southern and Western Railway line by the Waterford and Kilkenny Railway Company. Improved by Courtney, Stephens and Bailey of Dublin to designs prepared by Charles Richard Galwey (1840-94) the viaduct has subsequently been carefully maintained, thereby contributing significantly to the character of the locality.

After years of planning and hard work the Weir in Thomastown is back better than ever. Its now boasts a brand new swimming area which will be used by many a person from Thomastown and beyond. Its been over 6 years since we had a swimming area in Thomastown and now with the massive help from Thomastown Community River Trust - TCRT and Kilkenny LEADER Partnership we have a swimming area we can be very proud of. Congrats to all involved.

The now disused slate quarry at Ahenny County Tipperary was quarried from the 14th Century onwards. Stone from this site was used in the building of Kell Priory in Kells and Ornmonde Castle in Carrick on Suir. The quarry now hosts an outdoor gallery of sculptures.

Geologically this is a good place to see grey and blue Silurian rock.
This quarry is on private property.

Work has commenced on the former Boys School in Thomastown, Thomastown Town of Food Limited has leased the former Boys School in Cloghabrody from the Parish and Ossory Diocesan Trust. It will become the centre for the Town of Food Ltd, which has extensive plans for the building and grounds. It was a shame to see this building to get into such disrepair over the last couple of years but thankfully now it will be put to good use.
