A derelict fire engine that has been left lying in a council machinery yard has been lovingly brought back to life thanks to the dedication and hard work of Milltown native Billy Spring.

This piece of Kerry County Council’s history is one of the many restored engines that takes pride of place in Billy’s home in mid Kerry.

The Milltown man has always had a love of machinery, in particular engines, and over the years he has restored some wonderful historic pieces.

His latest project is certainly a piece of Kerry history given it once helped save lives in its role as a Killarney fire engine dating back to 1926, when it was one of the few fire tenders available in the county.

It’s the year 1876, and there are a few things happening around the world. We had Alexander Graham Bell making the very first telephone call in history, the composer Tchaikovsky completing his Swan Lake ballet, oh, and Kilgobnet NS right here in Kerry opened its doors for the very first time.
