St Michael's Roman Catholic Church, Enniskillen

Right in the heart of Enniskillen town centre, you can't miss it - the soaring spire of St Michael's.

Dominating the centre of town, this beautiful French Gothic revival style church was built in 1870-1875 under the direction of Belfast architects O'Neill & Byrne, having replaced an earlier church that was needing replaced.

Wonderfully maintained inside, it is famous for its beautiful wall paintings and its atmosphere of peace and tranquillity right in the middle of town.

And what makes this spot so special? It sits directly across the street from St Macartin's Church of Ireland Cathedral - just 20 yards apart. Two magnificent churches, face to face.

It was here in June 2012 that Queen Elizabeth II made her historic gesture of reconciliation, walking the twenty yards from the Church of Ireland Cathedral into St Michael's - the first time she had ever entered a Catholic Church on these islands.

If you visit one, do walk across and visit the other. Two outstanding examples of craftsmanship side by side.

Cushendun – the gift that keeps on giving ❤️

There are places in Northern Ireland that you can visit time and time again, and somehow they always show you something different.

Cushendun is one of those places.

The River Dun quietly making its way beneath the old stone bridge, the reflections dancing on the water, the trees leaning in around the river and the ever-changing Antrim sky…

Every visit seems to bring a new picture.

Perhaps that’s the magic of Cushendun.
It really is the gift that keeps on giving. 🍃💙

⛪️ ST MICHAEL'S TRORY - The little Church on the Hill That Was Saved By The Parishioners ⛪️

We visited this little church in Fermanagh recently — St Michael's Church of Ireland, Trory, just 2 miles north of Enniskillen.

It’s the stone church with the tower sitting high on the hill above the runway at St Angelo's Airport outside Enniskillen.

Built in 1778, it's a listed building. Sunday Service is still at 11.30am with Rev. Mark Gallagher, who is also Airport Chaplain.

Three reasons this little church is so special:

1. It was ordered to be demolished.

During WWII, when RAF St Angelo was a front-line base with Spitfires and Hurricanes, government orders were given to demolish the church because it sat too high and in the way of aircraft landing. The local community rallied and saved it — and as the Rector says, the pilots managed just fine!
You can see how it dominates the hill from the airport car park.

2. Was this a Mort House in the Graveyard beside the Church - it looks very like it? Perhaps someone from the church will confirm - or correct me?

Built close to the boundary wall to the side of the church, is this little vault with the black iron door and grass roof — (see photos).
Was this built as Trory Mort House / Watch House. In the early 1800s, body-snatchers — the 'Resurrection Men' — stole newly buried bodies to sell to medical schools. This little fortress was where coffins were locked away safely for weeks before burial, or where the family kept watch over a new grave.

3. That view!
From the back of the church, you get one of the best views in Fermanagh — straight out over Lower Lough Erne and the islands. Peaceful, beautiful and full of history.

Did you know …….. the lyrics of the popular old hymn, Abide With Me, was written by Henry Francis Lyte, a Scottish born Anglican clergyman, a few weeks before he died in 1847 at the age of 54 from tuberculosis.

Inspiration: The text is based on the biblical verse Luke 24:29 ("Abide with us: for it is toward evening...")

Listen to this hauntingly beautiful rendition played by the Murley Silver Band from Fivemiletown, Co Tyrone at the Brass Fest in The Buttermarket in Enniskillen on Saturday 5th September.

✈️ RAF TOWN SHOW - ENNISKILLEN 2026

A great day at the RAF Town Show at St Angelo Airport, Enniskillen!

It was a brilliant event - on Friday 4th & Saturday 5th September, 10am - 5:30pm with free entry and free activities for all.

Lots to see and do - from getting up close to the Typhoon jet, sitting in the cockpits of training aircraft, the RAF Recruitment village, Northern Ireland Wing Air Cadets, the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund etc.

The big kids and the little kids were all loving it - and all age groups were lined up waiting to get up close and see inside the cockpits!

What a day at Brass Fest! 🎺🎶

We spent some time at Brass Fest at The Buttermarket in Enniskillen today and what a turnout!

17 brass bands from all over Ireland, free music from 10am to 6:30pm, and The Buttermarket absolutely packed with people soaking up the atmosphere.

A brilliant celebration of community, culture and music - all supported by Fermanagh & Omagh District Council.

This crowd says it all 👇 The place was full from morning to evening, with families, visitors and locals all enjoying the fantastic concert programmes on stage.

And a real highlight - a stunning rendition of 'Barcelona' - the Freddie Mercury classic. Just spine-tingling! I've included a little video below, have a listen.

Huge congratulations to Artistic Director Stephen Crooks, the Fermanagh/Tyrone Brass Band Summer School team, all the bands, volunteers and the wonderful local businesses around The Buttermarket that make Enniskillen so special. 👏👏👏

A wee plea before you read on...
Our poor ould camels are feeling a bit dejected and unloved at the minute 😢. Could you give them a wee boost? A Like, a Love ❤️ and a Share would really lift their spirits and help to keep them happy.

Recap:
Gutted at having seen no
mini skirts in Portrush, they all made their way to the train station to find a way back home. By chance, Aul McDonald was at Portrush to view the cars - saw the camel crew standing at the station and offered them a lift back to Glenarm.

No boats at either village to help get the camels home
So further up the coast the poor aul camels had to roam
They passed the limestone Window where the Mad Man lay in wait
But knew not of the story that would be this poor man's fate

The camels - now well watered from their visit to Bridge End
Walked briskly towards the Halfway House - it's just around the bend
They met "Dave Boy McAuley" - a world be**er in his day
Where they enjoyed a rest before proceeding on their way

Before they left he showed them 'round the Halfway House Hotel
With pictures hanging on the wall - this guy did very well
This boxer guy he talked to them with all his grace and charm
And finished off by saying "Sure I might see yous in Larne"

Then Dave Boy next suggested - Ballygally's plush hotel
Just might provide a resting place including watering well
So off they set again - a journey this time not too far
And soon they all were sitting just outside the hotel bar

Said Tam tae Wull "The camels have a liking for this land"
They noticed longing glances at the Ballygally sand
Then in the heat - what they saw next - to them it seemed a dream
A big Mauds sign - all flavours - we must sample this ice-cream 🍦

So Tam - he tied the camels up - and in they went to SPAR
And asked for large ice-creams although they didn't walk too far
The man behind the counter said - "A slider or a poke?”
Sure Tam and Wull knew well he took the whole thing as a joke

The man behind the counter then let out a powerful roar
"Ice cream for 7 camels tied up outside my door"
I'll have to have a look at this - it's not a common theme
For 7 great big camels lukin for a Mauds ice-cream.”

Now end-of-day was coming soon - the beach - it looked just right
The sandy beach looked comfy just to bunk down for the night
"We'll wake wide eyed and bushy tailed" the two new drovers said
