Carlo Cretaro Photography Website coming soon As long as I can remember, I've always been nostalgic with the passing of time. That’s what I love about photography.

I was always conscious of the way it passes us by without stopping for anyone. A photograph freezes time and preserves a moment for eternity. Tony Murphy, who lives in Cornameeltha, Boyle, played a special role in my passion for taking photos. It was his photography and guidance through the Boyle camera club back in the mid 2000's that inspired me to take things more seriously. I'm a native of Boy

le, Co. Roscommon in Ireland but I’ve spent the last few years (2013 to 2020) travelling to 72 countries where I focused on documentary/street photography primarily. Those adventures were put on hold in early 2020 when Covid hit. Since then I've been photographing my hometown of Boyle as well as other parts of Ireland. I'm an IAA certified Drone Pilot, which has allowed me to take my photography to the skies.

Tibetan Buddhism doesn’t live behind closed doors. It’s in the streets, in the body, worn into the knees and the gloves and the beads of those who practice their faith here.

I’m not a religious person, but watching people surrender so completely to something greater than themselves stopped me every time.
I just stood there with my camera, trying not to get in the way.

We were just two strangers wandering through her village, in the hills north of Guilin, but she greeted us with the kind of warmth that needs no translation.

She waved us over to sit for a while, then happily posed for this portrait.

We never learned her name. The language barrier kept her story just out of reach, and I forgot to use the translator we had with us.

Ancient strategy meets modern technology.

14th April 2026

In China this board game is called Weiqi. “Go” is the name I would have known it as.
It’s an ancient strategy game where players place black and white stones to control territory on the board. Simple rules, but insanely complicated

It’s a street game played for centuries, now going head to head with a robot.

Same board….Same rules…different kind of opponent.

We’re travelling around China, Tibet, Japan and Mongolia for the next five months.

Beneath the shadow of Benbulbin, a silent witness to centuries of Irish life, sits an important book published in 2006....Vanishing Ireland. The book tells the stories and traditions of people born in the 1920s, 30s, and 40s.

By the time this book was printed, much of that world had already slipped away. And yet, standing here in 2025, it feels as though the past 19 years have changed Ireland more than the previous 90 combined. Traditions that lasted generations are disappearing in the span of a single one.

Our culture doesn’t vanish in one loud moment, it erodes quietly, piece by piece, until one day there’s nothing left to pass on.

That’s why we have to hold tight to what remains: our stories, our songs, our traditions, our culture, our language and our sense of place.

Because once they're gone, they're gone for good.

Ireland IS vanishing. It’s up to us all to make sure it doesn’t disappear completely.

📍 Atlas Film Studios, Ouarzazate, Morocco
📆 16th August 2025

We ventured into one of the world’s biggest film studios today for a wander around! From Ancient Egypt to medieval battles, this place has been the backdrop for some of Hollywood’s greatest films…

1. Egyptian Temple

Ancient Egypt in Morocco.
This temple set has starred in Cleopatra, Gladiator, Asterix & Obelix: Mission Cleopatra, and Exodus: Gods and Kings.

2. Fortress Siege

This fortress courtyard, complete with a giant catapult, set the stage for siege warfare in Gladiator and Kingdom of Heaven.

3. Buddha Hall

Inside the studio, sets like this towering Buddha hall have been redressed to stand in for temples across Asia.

4. Gladiator Market

The Slave Market: Gladiator 1
This dusty courtyard became the slave market where Maximus was sold into captivity. One of the most unforgettable scenes from Gladiator 1 was filmed right here.

5. Guide at Egypt Set

Amid the painted columns of the Egyptian palace, our guide shared the stories of how the various movies were filmed here.

6. Guide Indoors

In the shadows of a simple room, our guide revealed how Atlas transforms bare walls into grand halls of cinema.

7. Fortress Walls

These battlements have doubled as strongholds in Kingdom of Heaven and Alexander. This entire set took a full year to build.

Jemaa el-Fnaa in the old town in Marrakesh — 14th August 2025.

1. On a worn mat in the square, a street magician works his charm…all eyes on the egg as the trick unfolds. Still don’t know what the trick was!

2. The snake charmers play their haunting tunes…coils tighten, heads sway, and the crowd can’t look away.

3. Five women sit in a quiet line, their small bags of gold jewellery ready for the next passer-by willing to strike a deal.

4. A tight circle forms in the square…quick hands, quicker shuffles, and the three card monte scam plays out under curious eyes.

5. Under the setting sun, players try their luck in a quirky bottle-fishing game….hooking a Coke or Fanta.
