60 days of working in Vancouver..

I moved to Vancouver in the middle of May 2026, starting a job most people dream about.

This is what my last 60 days have looked like on the water.

Lucky escape for a trio of harbour seals from some prowling transient orcas.

4 pods of orca came together in an exciting encounter with a few harbour seals.
These orca need to eat 4% of their body weight each day, equating to roughly one harbour seal, per orca, per day.

Regardless of how many seals are caught during a hunt, the meal is always shared amongst the pod.
In this situation the seals managed to haul out onto a small rock to evade their hunters. The orca still cruised past showing their presence and intentions..

Prince below the mountain..

I finally became acquainted with the T101 pod yesterday, a pod I’ve been looking forward to seeing in person.
Reef, the matriarch of the pod, born in 1969 is still flanked by her two sons, Rush and Lagoon.
Lagoon, the younger of the two was born in 1997. I captured this photo of him cruising below the horizon of Mount Baker, standing in the distance in Washington state, just under 11,000 feet tall.
Orca have roamed these waters for as long as Mount Baker has been standing.
And hopefully they continue to roam even longer still.

Spy hopping..

Orcas and other cetaceans will often do something known as “Spy-hopping”

This orca popped her head out vertically purely to get a look at the boat and see who is looking back at her.
All the while, her calf splashed around playfully.

Orcas or killer whales are incredibly intelligent, both socially and emotionally.
Taking a second from her travels to notice humans noticing her, made for a special moment.

Incredible encounter today!!

A raft of stellar sea lions chasing three adult humpback whales.
Many people have called sea lions the dogs of the sea and it’s clear to see why when you see how playful they are and how irritating they can be towards other animals.

There was no aggression in this encounter, just playfulness and the possibility of a free meal from the humpback whales.

Killer whale convoy..

With ages ranging from 2002 to 2025, this pod of Transient or Biggs orcas were cruising through the calm waters off the coast of Vancouver Island.

Regardless of how many times you come across a pod of orcas, the magic is the same each time. Each pod has their own traits and habits.
Rocky, the adult male of this pod, was following closely behind his sisters, with his youngest sister (born last year) leading the way.

It’s not every day you have to put the big lens down because your subjects are too close!

Being mugged by 3 humpback whales isn’t something you expect very often, but when it does happen.. it’s jaw dropping.

3 enormous but curious cetaceans.

Perched

A pair of bald eagles sit watching for fish just below the surface.
Bald eagles predominantly eat fish but often resort to scavenging.
These two were perched not too far from a haul out rock with stellar sea lions, and they have no problem swooping in to steal a discarded fish off the rocks.

A month in Vancouver and I’m only scratching the surface

Humpback Whales, Orca, Stellar sea lions, and bald eagles are just the start of what I’ve been so excited to see since coming to British Columbia.

These are just a few of my favourite clips that I’ve shot since moving here.
