Sanderlings are such a wonderful bird to photograph here in Ireland. Their delicate plumage, restless nature and affinity for the shoreline make them a real joy to spend time with, especially when you can get down low and capture them in their coastal environment.

One of the most beautiful terns we get here in Ireland, the Roseate Tern is always a privilege to see. I loved the soft, atmospheric conditions in this image, with the tern perched quietly on the rock.

Normally, I’d probably walk past a wader in a setting this busy. But being right at the water’s edge changed everything. 🌊

The incoming tide caught the light beautifully, turning the tangled seaweed into something really interesting, highlights, reflections and a lovely sense of atmosphere.

Sometimes the messy bits make the picture.

Autumn migration is now well underway, and over the last few days the numbers of waders along our coasts and estuaries have really started to swell.

Now is the time to get the camera out, grab your binoculars and head down to the coast. Take some time to watch the spectacle unfold, you never quite know what might turn up amongst them.

This time of year is a photographer’s and birder’s dream.

The sand martin (also known as the bank swallow) captured in this incredible action shot is a marvel of aerial agility! These tiny, fast-flying birds spend their lives on the wing, darting through the air with unmatched precision.

A quiet enough day on the Atlantic, but some cracking birds made the pelagic trip out of Kilbaha, County Clare, well worthwhile.

Four Sabine’s Gulls of different ages gave us some beautiful views, along with Storm Petrels battling the waves. But the highlight for me was undoubtedly the couple of Cory’s Shearwaters, fantastic birds to see so well from the boat.

Another memorable day at sea with good friends and great birds.

The Red Grouse, a true icon of the British and Irish uplands.

While the Red Grouse found across Britain is Lagopus lagopus scotica, our Irish birds are a different subspecies, Lagopus lagopus hibernicus. Subtle differences, but a special bird in its own right.

Always a pleasure to get a low-level portrait of this beautiful upland species.
