I'm delighted to report that all three young Peregrine Falcons I've been following have now successfully fledged. The last youngster took the leap yesterday and, despite the species' reputation as one of the world's greatest aerial hunters, this newly fledged bird showed that everyone has to start somewhere! After an awkward first flight that ended with a tumble into the bracken on the cliff edge, it gathered its courage and, half an hour later, flew back up to the ledge from which it had taken its first leap. A wonderful moment to witness and proof that even the masters of the skies have to learn their trade.

I always like to get out at least once a year to photograph my local Sand Martins at their colony. Such charismatic little birds, and amazingly tiny too. A real summer highlight for me.

A true jewel of the Iberian Peninsula, the Iberian Great Shrike is found nowhere else in the world, making Spain its exclusive home. Seeing this striking predator perched watchfully over the landscape was a real privilege and another reminder of the incredible wildlife that makes Spain so special.

An unforgettable morning with this stunning young male lynx. Out of season and privileged to witness these magnificent cats being supplemented while raising cubs. Moments like this are why we spend time in the wild. 🐾

It’s that time off year again so we are heading to Kilcoole on Saturday 20th June for our annual visit to the Little Tern colony. NPWS folks will be on hand to tell us about the Cooldross breeding project, and of course we will see and hear all sorts of interesting species on our walk from the station car park.

Full details in the poster (designed by Noelle Doyle). We’ll look forward to seeing you there!

One of the highlights of a trip to the Saltee Islands a couple of weeks ago was this stunning Great Northern Diver in the harbour, resplendent in full breeding plumage. I've photographed this species many times over the years, but never one quite so advanced in its summer colours. A remarkably late bird for mid-May, and a real privilege to spend time with such a magnificent visitor.
