Common Shelduck at the Kfar Ruppin ponds — true filter-feeders. Much of the time their heads are underwater, sieving through water and mud to pick up food from the bottom. It looks like synchronized swimming: tails up, heads down — over and over again.

Cormorants are often seen standing with their wings spread—this isn’t a “pose,” but a way to dry off after a dive. Their feathers are less oily and waterproof than those of many other waterbirds, so they get wetter while fishing. Spreading the wings helps them warm up and dry faster in the sun and breeze.

And that’s exactly why this perfectly timed shot happened: not just wing-drying… but also a little “extra unloading” in real time 😄
Photographed at the ponds near Kibbutz Kfar Ruppin, in the Beit She’an Valley.

Yes—sparrows eat fruit too, especially in season, not just crumbs and seeds.
This photo offers a small glimpse into the busy lives of these quick little birds—never darting around for no reason, but constantly foraging and searching for food.

In the Beit She’an Valley, along the streams of Park HaMa’ayanot (Park of the Springs), a very alert population of Chiffchaffs lives year-round. They rarely stay still—quick hops, brief pauses, a sharp glance in every direction, and then on they go. This one paused for a moment on the fence, and was photographed just before disappearing back into the thicket.
