And we are back-

The city of Ahmedabad has presented itself much differently since the last time I was here. As I have returned, for my post-graduation, walking down the same old narrow gullies reveal so much more, frames that I had never noticed before. I suppose what one sees in the ordinary changes with time.

Here's to re-experience this highly misunderstood gem of a city.

(Still hate the summers justifiably)

Time has not been kind to these ruins as it was not to Ozymandias, but the sheer craftmanship of early medieval Indian sculptors resonates through the carvings and pillars, even today.

A few kilometres north of Ahmedabad, you can take a look at the remnants of Solanki architecture that are about a thousand year old. The Sun temple of Modhera and Rani ki Vav near Patan.

The prior being an medieval temple dedicated to Surya (the sun god) build almost perfectly on the tropic of cancer and being such that the first rays of the sun perfectly enter the garbagriha (sanctum) on both the solar equinoxes. A lot of the architecture and the carvings are also based on ancient atrology and hindu mythology.

The later is a stepwell made for the Solanki queen, with intricate stone carvings which are well preserved due to being buried in sand and silt over time. The carvings depict several hindu gods including Vishnu and his incarnations. They also show carved patterns and motifs that are used in the famous Patola woven textiles even today.

A glimpse of these magnificent stuctures fuels one's curiosity as to how grand these civilizations once were, that are now burried away, in dry sand.
