Mohammad Shaban Malla, a fisherman from Laharwalpora village in North Kashmir's Bandipora keeps alive the tradition of selling smoked fish, locally known as Hoggards. He says the trade, which once provided a good living for fishermen, has declined by nearly 40–50% over the years as fish numbers in Wular Lake have fallen due to the lake’s deteriorating condition. Malla stresses that increased dredging is essential to sustain the livelihoods of those dependent on the lake. Wular Lake is Asia’s second-largest freshwater lake and supports over 2,300 fisher households in Bandipora and Sopore regions of Kashmir valley.
