Water Bubbles

Getting introduced to the nostalgic game of soapy water bubbles was one of the best things that happened to my childhood.

Every time I used to find the seller blowing bubbles on the street, I use to plead my parents to buy me one. I might still find a couple of those plastic boxes lying in my old almirahs. I’m sure the scent of the bubble recipe might still be there.

Call it childlike-innocence, I just couldn’t contain the excitement while blowing these bubbles. But it definitely taught me a lesson.

‘To stop seeking validation’.

Over the years, I might have blown thousands of bubbles from hundreds of plastic cups, but every time, the number was countable. Multiples of two, for the record.

This went on for a few years and recently when I hit the streets after buying my new DSLR, I found one seller blowing bubbles.

The bubbles were dense. They were in hundreds. United and almost made the seller invisible. I decided to rekindle my childhood and bought one. The guy took the money, gave a smile, thanked god by looking up at the scorching sun and vanished into thin air.

I gave a break to my photography session and went back to blowing bubbles. Again, it was all the same. I just couldn’t get it right.

I turned back, looked around and after a few minutes, found the seller and asked him, ‘How did you manage to get so many bubbles; whereas I’m struggling here with little?’

He took a deep drag from his beedi(handmade cigarette) and jokingly said, ‘Count nahi karne ka, bas udao jaise koi aaspas nahi hain’ (Don’t count, just blow those bubbles like no one is around).

His munnabhai-like advice hit me hard that day and I realised the moment we stop seeking validation, ignoring the judgemental voices and stop quantifying things, our lives would be wonderful.
