The Moon started its life about 4.5 billion years ago as a giant ball of magma formed from the remains of an impact on Earth. After the debris from this impact collected into a sphere, the magma began to cool and form the lunar crust. The Maria basins were formed beginning about 3.9 billion years ago during a period of heavy bombardment of asteroid sized bodies. Some of the large impacts carved out basins in the lunar surface and because the Moon had not yet fully cooled on the inside lava began to ooze out through the fissures and filled the craters. Over millions of years these cooled, solidified and formed flat dark plains on the Moon.
