Hello everyone. Hope you all had a very happy weekend.
Here is a video blog of latest photoshoot where we photographed few young Bharatanatyam dancers who are ready to take the stage for Arangetram (Ranga Pravesha in Kannada) this June.
It was a wonderful experience working with these talanted people.
Bharatanatyam is a major genre of Indian classical dance that originated in Tamil Nadu .
Traditionally, Bharatanatyam has been a solo dance that was performed exclusively by women, and expressed Hindu religious themes and spiritual ideas
It is now the most popular classical Indian dance style, enjoys high degree of support in expatriate Indian communities, and is considered to be synonymous with Indian dance by many foreigners
unaware of the diversity of dances and performance arts in Indian culture. In the second half of the 20th century, Bharatanatyam has been to Indian dance tradition what ballet has been in the West.
Arangetram (Ranga Pravesha) -
In Tamil Arangam means a stage and etram means rising or climbing, thus arangetram literally means climbing the stage or reaching the stage.
It refers to the graduation ceremony where the guru presents his or her pupil to the public.
It traces its origins to the devdasi (temple dancer) tradition.
Arangetram can be done for other Indian classical dance styles such as Kathak, Kuchipudi, Manipuri, Kathakali, and vocal and instruments like Mridangam, ghatam, and violin.
