Drang-Drung is the second largest glacier (after Siachen) in the Karakoram range, located at 4870m altitude in Kargil-Zanskar road in Zanskar Valley.

I happen to pay visit to Zanskar Valley during month of June 2017 for starry nights to capture the glacier with milkyway background. After reaching the glacier on 5th day morning our camping, it was scary for us to go near the valley to setup camera for photographing as wind blowing away as it can lift the people up.. but it was better in the night time. Had an opportunity to click some amazing images.

The best part was there were no clouds much during our stay unlike 2 of 5 days of different camping at Zanskar valley washed out for us! The time I have captured the images was at around 3'O clock in the night where you would get to capture the milkyway in vertical position and it was freezing cold with wind makes you little difficult to breath and work on making the images, but totally worth it!!! :)

I happened to meet a fellow participant and photographer from Newzealand, David, who explained me a lot about the culture, history, 'haka', 'mauri' during our dining time told me that Newzealand also have astonishing Glaciers and Volcanes but very difficult to reach to the vantage points to make an image of the same. No wonder we have been blessed and also attract lot of tourists.

P.S.: I have opened my shutter for 30" and due to this you would be noticing some trailing in stars and which makes it looks like little blurry. Recommended would be 20" but most important factor is effective focal length on your lens.

A trip to starry nights & glaciers suddenly welcomed to click a couple of shots of my favourite genre 'wildlife'. I was totally astonished to sight long-tailed mormot during my visit to Zanskar valley. I have missed clicking them during my last trip on our way to Pangong as photographing these species near Chang La was forbidden for their safety.

This was our first sighting during our voyage towards Zanskar valley and the next day onwards sighted plenty of them but extremely shy as they not been used to humans.

The routes we have picked this time are interior locations in the Zanskar valley and we didn't find much of tourists (hardly 15 for 5 days camping, includes bikers, motor bikers) and lots of local people.

It was wonderful exploring the inside Kashmir, valleys, glaciers and visiting villages during our voyage. Keep watching this space for more images from my recent trip.

"झगमग तारें, दो तारें, नौ तारें, सौं तारें
झगमग सारे, हर तारा है शरारा",
my heart was singing when I was capturing the milky way galaxy atop Nun Kun peak during 5 nights camping trip to Zanskar Valley last week. Let me share you guys our experience during the camping:

A summer Ladakh is long days and short nights. The light won't go down till 7'O clock in the night and day lights will be as bright by 4 to 4:30 in the morning. So, every evening (for me), to find a spot for my tripod and camera setup and focus on Nun Kun around 6'O clock in the evening, fire couple of test shots to see focus is right and sharp. Come back around 8-9 to check the night sky visible with milky way on it's way (;)), provided clouds don't play the spoil sport and no rains. Click couple of shots again to see everything with milky way capturing is fine and then go back to our tents, take a nap (and do any adjustments in your settings with camera and composition). An alarm to wake
up late night around 1'O clock to capture
the milky way 'vertical'. Vertical composition to capture as much as galaxy, yeah.. again, provided we don't have clouds or rain and blessed with beautiful, clear sky in the freezing cold and windy night!

This image is particularly shot at longest exposure my camera body supports i.e. 30"(Sec) at widest aperture(f/3.5) at 18mm (which is ~28mm on my cropped sensor) and vertical framing to capture as much as the galaxy. Feels good, isn't it? :D
