Kalijai temple is among the most visited tourist place in Odisha. It is located on a island in middle of Chilika Lake which is Asia’s largest saltwater lagoon and also the largest winter ground of migratory birds in the Indian subcontinent. The deity worshipped here was apparently once a girl named Jai who was going to her in-laws on a boat in this lake, and was killed in an accident after a heavy storm capsized the boat. The temple was built on the site where the boat sank; the locals, fishermen, sailors and even some tourists visit the temple to pray for a safe journey to the lagoon. Besides regular days during Makar Sankranti maximum no. of visitors have been witnessed.
