NEEL SOSTHHI

Usually observed a day before the Bengali New Year. On this day at Sandeswar Tala, Chinsurah the locals observe this auspicious day through a series of events, where Lord Shiva was married to Parvati and the usual wedding rituals are practised. But mainly on this day a large section of people from the working class and those who are usually from the lower caste of society observe it on a different mass scale. They usually in the first half of the day form a group and go out to perform bhiksha seeking "Dhuno G**o" in Malsa(an earthen bowl). On the later part of the day close to midnight the same group comes down to the Mandir premises to perform Dhuno Porano or you can say a fire fest. Some of the groups also perform short Jatra Pala in front of the temple. All in all it's an age old practice observed in different parts of Bengal in different forms. Sadly, these traditional practices are not seeping down to the next generation, which I think is highly required, as I say always know your roots. Presenting here a set of photos I took to give you a feel of the entire thing.
