Ashy-throated Warbler

Lifer! Small and beautiful, but extremely quick and restless. Only when you nail it, you will realise the beauty of this species. The colour and its pattern are completely different when compared to other warblers. Glad that I was able to click it in couple of occasions.

A whisper of olive moves through the canopy, its throat washed grey as morning mist over pine ridges. The Ashy-throated Warbler flits with restless purpose, gleaning insects from the underside of leaves few eyes would think to check. Its call—a thin, wiry trill—threads through the forest almost too fine to catch, like a seam in silence. Pale supercilium traces a hint of expression across an otherwise unassuming face, easy to overlook, impossible to forget once known. It belongs to the high, cool forests where mist lingers late, a small grey ghost stitching itself into the green.

Lifer! Play with lights and shadows! He was in beautiful plumage. Pretty close but shy.

A flash of slate-blue crowns the hillside scrub, the male’s cap catching light like frost that refuses to melt with morning. He perches low on thorn and bramble, chestnut mantle warming the grey around him, singing a thin, insistent note into the dry wind. Below him the female moves unnoticed, streaked brown and modest, gleaning seeds from terraced slopes where the Himalaya begins its long fall into plains. Come winter, small parties drift downhill, restless travelers of altitude, until spring calls the caps back to their high, stony thrones.

Brownish-flanked Bush Warbler

Lifer! A very cooperative individual that just did not bother or worry about our presence. That means, the bird accepted us spontaneously due to the confidence that we had given in its territory and we got all our shots.

In tangled undergrowth where sunlight rarely reaches, the Brownish-flanked Bush Warbler moves like a whispered secret. Its plain earth-toned plumage—warm brown above, washed buff below—seems woven from the very thicket that conceals it. More often heard than seen, its sharp, insistent call pierces the density of ferns and bamboo, a voice bold where its body stays hidden. It creeps low and mouse-like through the shadows, seldom rising to reveal itself fully. In the damp Himalayan undergrowth, it embodies patience rewarded—a bird that teaches the watcher stillness before it offers even a glimpse.

Blyth’s Leaf Warbler

Lifer! Another stunning beauty. So small but colourful. Very restless indeed. Had just seen it once in the whole trip.

A flicker of olive-green in the canopy, always more voice than shape. Blyth’s leaf warbler moves through Himalayan oak and fir like a rumour, its two-note call — a rising, insistent “chiff-chiff” — carried on cold mountain air. The pale supercilium is the only clue against a restless flurry of leaves. It forages with a nervous, almost anxious energy, gleaning insects from the underside of every leaf it passes. A bird built for altitude and shadow, easier heard than seen, easier felt than named.

Tytler’s Leaf Warbler

Lifer! A beautiful Warbler that I came across for the first time. It gave us a very tough time, but the wait was worth it. These small cuties are always the tough ones to picture. It helps you check your body reflexes.

A slip of olive-green light in the canopy, restless as thought — Tytler’s Leaf Warbler forages with the ceaseless flutter of a leaf caught mid-fall. Its pale supercilium draws a thin blade of clarity above the eye, cutting through the forest’s dim shuffle of shadows. The call comes thin and wiry, a single unspooling note dropped into the hush of oak and rhododendron. It moves through the mid-storey like a rumor — briefly certain, then gone. In the cool Himalayan air it seems less a bird than a flicker the forest permits itself, one blink at a time.

Grey-crowned Goldfinch

Lifer! What s stunning beauty. We saw a few in small groups of 4-5, but they were extremely shy and did not give the pose to our taste.

Grey-crowned Goldfinch — sunlit gold catching on wingbars as it works a thistle head, feet clasping the stem like a practiced acrobat. The pale ash crown gives way to warm cinnamon flanks, a quiet contrast against the yellow flash of its wings in flight. Its call is a bright, tinkling chatter, scattered like seed husks on mountain air. Found in flocks along Himalayan slopes, it moves with restless, chattering energy through birch and rhododendron edges. In winter light it becomes a small ember among grey branches, refusing to let the season dim it.

White-browed Fulvetta

Lifer! One of the small and cute Skulker. We had to wait for 3hrs before we got this shot in the open. A very quick restless mover. Will test your reflexes to the Max. My Nikon Z8 helped me as it was faster and sharper than the bird!

Small brown wanderer of the mid-hill thickets, stitching itself through tangled undergrowth in restless little bands. Its pale brow arches like a permanent question, a thin bright line above an otherwise modest face. The voice is a soft, chattering murmur, the sound of company kept close and constant. Never alone, never still — always three or four moving together as one nervous pulse through the leaves. A bird easy to overlook, harder to forget once that startled white eyebrow catches the light.

White-browed Scimitar Babbler

Lifer! To get a shy bird in an open perch was magical. These are so beautiful in excellent lighting conditions.

It moves through the undergrowth like a rumour — furtive, deliberate, never quite where you expect it. The long, downcurved bill, pale as old ivory, probes the leaf litter with the patience of a seasoned forager. That bold white supercilium cuts sharply across a russet face, an unmistakable brushstroke in the forest shadows. Its call — a rich, rolling duet — spills out from dense thickets long before the bird itself deigns to appear. A creature of secrets, it rewards only those willing to wait in stillness. Definitely a GEM from the Himalayan series!

Black Bulbul

Again, the colour contrast was so beautiful, it made my frame!

A restless silhouette in sooty grey, the black bulbul threads the canopy with a crest like a question mark held aloft. Its cry—shrill, almost human—startles the hush of high branches before dawn fully breaks. Wings flicker dark against pale Himalayan light, never still, never quite landing. It travels in loose, chattering bands, more rumor than flock. Even unseen, it announces the forest is awake.

Chestnut-bellied Nuthatch (male)

Nuthatch going nuts in Coral floral! This guy was extremely bold and spent almost 20mts with us. I have never experienced this behaviour earlier. We actually spotted a pair. Probably a mating call!

The Chestnut-bellied Nuthatch moves along the bark like a living riddle — head down, defying gravity as if the tree itself were inverted. Its slate-blue mantle catches the forest light in quiet flashes, while the warm chestnut of its breast glows like embers cradled in moss. It probes every furrow and crease of the trunk with a needle-thin bill, reading the bark for what the eye cannot see. A sharp, nasal pwit-pwit rings through the sal and teak forests of the Indian subcontinent, announcing its presence long before it comes into view. Small and sovereign, it asks nothing of the ground, spending its entire life in the vertical world of wood and bark.
