Elephant at Etosha National Park. An early morning drive les us to witness two hers of elephants bathing at a waterhole. The little ones were especially fun to@watch. This adult@was guarding the herd and once everyone had their turn, she started bathing. Truly a majestic sight.

Cheetah Mother and Cub at the Etosha National Park. These two were happily chasing each other with the cub annoying the mother (I guess kids are a pain but n all species 😂😍). They stopped for a moment to. investigate us. Then they continued o playing as if we weren’t there. Very fun to watch.

Deadvlei, Namibia. What an amazing place! Even in death, the form of a tree is complex and beautiful. This was shot on my A7R 2 with the Lensbaby Composer 2 lens (Sweet 50 optics). The lens add an almost dreamlike effect further accentuating the beautynofnthis petrified tree.

This is a portrait of a student at the art school, Kerala Kalamandalam. It’s a high school where students spend about 10 years (13 to 23 year old)perfecting their dancing, drumming and costume art for various traditional Kerala dance performances.

This particular art student is working on a Kathakali mask. The mask is painted with dye mixed with rice flour (increasing viscosity) and this particular one depicts Rama.

Someday I would love to do a photo project here following the students around for a whole week.

Usually when you find a nudibranch during a dive, they are quite static and not really moving. This little guy was trying to get in another coral and it was fun watching him reach out. Will post the video a little later…stay tuned. The dive was done with the team from Sun Siyam Iru Veli.

Sunrise at the Kerala Backwaters. The backwaters are a series of canals that connect the coastal villages to the sea. Most folks living here are fishermen or rice farmers. It’s a beautiful place but the charm is a little lost due to the many tourist and their blaring music. The best part of this trip was a sunrise tour around the canals in a small boat. Next time I will stay in a hotel and hire the small boat for two hours instead. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Munnar is home to a large tea estate started back in the 1800s by the British. Currently it’s owned by a single tea producer and employs a large number of people to pick and process the tea leaves. 4kg of tea leaves produces 1kg of tea. Food for thought here is with so many workers, middle-men and manual steps in processing (I.e. hand-picking the leaves), tea is still cheap and widely drunk globally. So how much is the common tea picker paid for their monumental efforts?? …something to ponder on while you sip your next cup of tea. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Danvers & Drummers Pt. 2

Kerala is home to some really interesting and unique artforms. Dances such as Mohinoattam and Kathakali requires years of rigurosa practice and training since it not only involve movement of the body but also facial expressions and hand configurations. I was fortunate to have visited an amazing art school called Kalamandalam where 13 to 23 year olds have kept the art alive for decades. Formed in 1930s, it’s a highly competitive school that admits students at the age of 13 to learn the artforms in the morning and their regular lessons in the afternoon. Pt. 2 of this post shows the drum students practicing their craft. They are taught to play the drums on dummy instruments so that once they start playing the drums, they can learn to control the strength of their drumming to modulate the tones produced. The drummers are trained on two different drums individually and then once they are proficient in their instruments, they play together to produce the music needed for the dance performances. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
