It is a rare comfort to find a place that simply asks you to stand still, listen to the water, and just be. Hakone is one of them. Hakone has historically been a place of mandatory pause. During the Edo period, it served as a strict checkpoint on the Old Tokaido road, halting travelers moving between Kyoto and Edo. Homare Bashi (the bridge in the photo)—meaning “Bridge of Honor”—echoes this history of transition.
