Motherhood. It is almost always the biggest life-changing event for a woman. There is suddenly this entire new person that is born in you, personality-wise and of course, for real, the one that you create.
I sometimes look back and wonder when did this happen to me? Exactly when?
Was it when I delivered? But I was almost unconscious then. Or was it when I first held him? That sure was pretty intense, right? I guess I figured it out when I opened up to going further back in time….
Without getting into specifics, back when we conceived, I and my husband were going through a very tough time, there was little hope and too much uncertainty. We planned a baby to have something to look forward to in our lives. We were 8 weeks into pregnancy and all we knew was it seemed like news that made our family happy and so we thought it must be a good thing.
I was scheduled for a major first trimester check-up. It was a Saturday so we left a little early to visit farmer’s market at Mahalaxmi Race Course before my appointment. We picked up some healthy organic produce, shopped for some trinklets, watched an amateur band perform and left for the clinic.
The friendly lady doctor said we shall have our first ultrasound as well today and took us in one of the rooms with a high end ultra sound machine and a bed. I lied down and she started by telling us that this is a time by when the baby would have formed a heart and she is going to check for the heartbeat. Once she assessed that things were fine, she asked us if we would like to hear the heartbeat. We nodded ignorantly. As she increased the volume in the machine and gave us an amazing smile, we were shaken to our core. We heard our baby’s heartbeat as it went dup dup dup dup…..and almost instantly we looked at each other and tears rolled down our eyes. That was it. The moment when it all changed. It was a volcano of emotion, to love, to protect, to care, to be together, stronger. In that moment the mother in me was born to live and grow with my little one.
Some of the most awesome things happen to us when we are not expecting them, that is probably what makes them awesome in the first place. These are the moments that make life worthwhile. For me, I am sure this feeling, this moment is one of the things that I will reminisce always and forever!
Happy Mother's Day!!
