Dancing Girl on Stainless Steel

I have been admiring and researching the Dancing Girl for a while now.
It started with a question: how do two statues discovered in Mohenjo-daro, one of a man, the ‘Priest King’, and one of a woman, the ‘Dancing Girl’, depict a man and a woman in such contrasting forms?
One b***y, draped in authority, the other think and frail, adorned and bare.

I wonder who made these. Of course, men? And I wonder how they saw women. Always as a commodity. I wonder, how dare they?

As I think of gathering, multiplicity, I believe we carry her weight with us after all these years.

However much they try to censor us, clothe us, contain us, and decide what we should be, she remains.

We will embrace it.
Bare.

In my thousand walled home, reside the thousand voices that preceded me. In my thousand walled home, I am free to be in and out. I am free to close and to open. In my thousand walled home, voices echo and surround.

What does it mean to inhabit a space, to break the walls down and build again? To build how you want to.

‘weight of me’ opens on 18th June, 6-9pm
ASC Cleaver Street Project Space

Supported by .press, a fine art editioning house.

In 2022, I began photographing women — only a few — alongside fragments from their journals. I have always believed that our writings hold so much of us: our predecessors, our futures, our inner worlds. I wanted to know what women were writing. Some chose to hide parts, some revealed more — only what they were comfortable sharing. These are documentations that never saw the light of day.

The project soon took a back seat, but I continued collecting and archiving women’s journal writings. This time, whole and unhidden.
Whatever I was getting out of these writings, I want to be able to share it with all of us, as these are our Gita, our Bible, our Quran.
What our mothers, aunts, grandmothers, sisters have written, that’s the holy text I want to inhale and inhabit.

2026, I am sharing a very small part of those writings in my upcoming show, ‘Weight of Me’. This time, as echoes of such women, as sounds that envelop us.

Been in the .press studio for the last few months, spending time with print, process, and making. It’s been exciting to watch the work slowly come alive.

I’ve always been inclined towards making things with my own hands and translating thoughts and emotions through my practice. Everything I create comes from a deeply personal space, and I’m grateful to be doing something I truly love. ✨

Happy to share that ‘Reverence in Stone’, a series of photopolymer etchings is currently exhibiting at Affordable Art Fair Hong Kong as part of the British Pavilion.

It’s the memory of a memory. Of a memory.
How a memory is fuzzy, and the work seems to appear and disappear as you journey across them.

A way of record keeping. Impressions of state of mind.

Reverence in Stone | Photopolymer etchings on Khadi paper wrapped around stainless steel

Details of some photo etchings I have been working on. Thinking of this idea of how we revere stones and architecture and archeological forms, often entrapping a soul within them.
Each image is layers of such entrapments, where I try and destruct and reconstruct them to unearth the soul beneath.

I treat the stainless steel as a hard form that backs the works, making them object/painting like, giving the strength to our fragile thoughts.

Building Blocks. Toppling over. Impressions of state of mind.

I have been thinking of ruins, homes, boundaries, the act of preservation and the act of unravelling, of breaking down. Current explorations in imprinting to preserve, to break apart. To leave a mark.
