Keep calm and Continuous auto focus.
How do you get tack sharp images when a predator which can kill you with a single swipe of its paw is rapidly filling your viewfinder ?
Well you have to use Continuous Auto Focus (C-AF in Nikon, AI-Servo in canon). Most cameras will have this setting even entry level ones. You have to switch from single point AF to C-AF (preferably before encountering the man-eating predator ) .
In Single point AF the camera will focus on half press and not refocus again if the subject moves. In C-AF the camera will keep tracking a moving target as long as the shutter button is half pressed. So when you're shooting flying birds, moving animals etc, C-AF is an absolute must.
Steps I follow to shoot moving targets .
1) Turn on camera (All pros do it)
2) Remove lens cap ( helps image quality a lot)
3) Switch from S-AF to C-AF in the focus menu.
4) Select center point focus instead of any automatic mode.
5) Focus once on a moving target and keep the shutter button half pressed to track the target. Don't forget to press the shutter button all the way otherwise you wont get any pictures! (:D)
6) Start using back button focus. (another topic for later)
7) Go out and shoot!
