Some businesses begin with money.
Some begin with ambition.
Ours began with friendship, trust, and a camera unloaded from a car in 1952.

After Partition, my grandfather Hemandas Fathumal Ramchandani rebuilt life through a small framing shop in Poona. Then one day, a kind-hearted customer named Mr. Arole walked in with cameras, darkroom equipment, photography books, chemicals, and a dream bigger than all of us.

Within seven days, “The Art Gallery” photo studio was born.

This is the emotional story of how our family’s photography legacy truly began — through courage, craftsmanship, darkroom magic, and one man’s belief in another.

A nostalgic journey into vintage Indian photography, analog studios, darkroom culture, and the roots of a family archive that still lives on today.

There was a time in Hyderabad when a photograph was not just decoration — it became a landmark, a gathering point, even a place of devotion.

Outside the legendary Rani Art Studio, my father Purshotham Das Ramchandani (“Pishu”) displayed a giant 4x6-foot photograph of Satya Sai Baba on the studio shutter facing the main road. Lit beautifully with tube lights and quiet reverence, the image began attracting devotees every Thursday evening.

Women sat on the footpath singing bhajans, offering flowers and prasad beneath the softly glowing portrait. Slowly, the street transformed into a living temple.

People stopped saying:
“Near the petrol pump.”

Instead, they began saying:
“Near that big Baba photo.”

This is a story of old Hyderabad, darkroom-era photography, visual storytelling, faith, and one photographer’s creative vision long before branding and marketing became fashionable terms.

“When Hyderabad said ‘Impossible’… he said ‘Yes, we can.’”

In the early 70s, a client walked into Rani Art Studio with a crazy demand:

👉 4ft x 6ft giant photographs
👉 Multiple angles, multiple lighting moods
👉 A bungalow dramatically built on rocks — “On the Rocks”

At that time, only big studios in Bombay or Madras dared to try such work.

Hyderabad? Not a chance.

But one man didn’t hesitate.

He smiled and said —
“Yes, we can.”

What followed wasn’t just photography…
It was pure jugaad genius:

🖤 Entire studio turned into a darkroom
🖤 Enlarger placed on a sales counter
🖤 30-minute exposures
🖤 Giant prints developed on the floor using sponge & buckets

And when the prints came alive…

👉 The client literally danced.

This is not just a story.
This is legacy.
This is courage.
This is old-school innovation at its finest.
