A Land Untouched - Asirgarh Fort.
You may have heard the song about M.P Tourism "MP ajab hai , sabse gazab hai". Well , apparently , every line of that song and especially the one mentioned above is true. MAdhya Pradesh is truly a beautiful place with a rich heritage and culture.
I came around one more gems of the crown of places in MP , The Unassailable Fort of Asirgarh. Yes and the description of this for as "Unassailable" is absolutely bang on. It is built 700 mtrs above sea level and the final 4.5 kms is a steep hill side and that being the only side to reach the fort makes its even more hard to access. But once you reach the fort, its all worth it.
Its a beautiful blend of Islamic , Persian and Turkish architecture and the fort is built with great patience and precision. It was built in 1382 A.D. Some local legends suggest that it was built by a farmer Asa Ahir to protect his animals and alter it was acquired by the Faruqui dynasty and named the fort after Asa Ahir. Some legends say that the Fort was built by Asa Ahir who was ruler and later the Faruqui dynasty ruler won it in a battle. One way or the other, the fort is named after Asa Ahir.
But the fort is an architectural marvel itself. It is divided in three parts namely Malaigarh, Kamargarh and then comes the main fort Asirgarh. It is considered a very important fort in the Indian history as it was also called the "Decan of South", which loosly translates to "The Door to South" . It measn that anyone who wanted to conquer southern India and if he had Asirgarh under his belt , then the rest of the task was a piece of cake - Almost.
Therefore many great rulers and dynasties including Akbar, The Holkars, The Marathas and the British have been in constant struggle in order to acquire this fort.
Another reason for this being a unique place is the water system in the fort - The Kundi Bhandara or popularly known as Khooni Bhandara. This water system is so special because it was used to supply water to the fort from the 5 artificial lakes built below the fort against the force of gravity ! Yes ! You heard it right. The water system was built in such a way that the water from these lakes traveled uphill without any water pump and that too 700 years ago !
The fort is also said to be visited by the famous character from Mahabharat - Ashwaththama. It is said that he is the first to worship Lord Shiva in the temple built inside the fort. It is believed that he visits the fort every morning and the first flower deposited on the Shivling is offered by him.
So the stories of the fort are endless and fascinating. I think it was worth all the steep dangerous roads and 4 hours of tiring travel. Because once you reach at the top, the only words which come out of your mouth are - WOW !
