A young boy recently came to visit Faded Films.
He was referred to me by one of his family members.
He told me that he wanted to be in the filmmaking industry. Since we have been into cinematography for the last 7 years, he wanted my advice on how to further his career.
“College or Practical learning (by working for someone professional)” - he asked.
My honest opinion:
I completed my 3-year degree in cinematography. I almost learned nothing about what I do in college. I had to learn it all by myself by working with other people.
So I advised him to not choose college (plus he had already completed his bachelor’s degree).
“How much money do you want to make?”
He pondered and replied “12 LPA”. It sounded pretty reasonable to me.
“By what age do you want to be financially independent?”
“23-24” - he replied (he is currently 20).
“Show me some of the pictures you have clicked.”
He showed me some nice photos that he had clicked with his phone. One could easily see that he knows framing, perspective, angle, lighting etc.
Here’s what I advised him:
“You don’t have cameras, lenses, and other equipment because they are expensive.”
The only people who have this equipment are professionals.
So.. Work for a professional. Work for multiple professional people. You are a newbie but you can still make yourself useful.
Give it one year. ONE YEAR at least. After one year, you will have pretty much an idea of the industry and you’ll be able to make some money as well.
As fancy as it looks, this field demands a lot. Late night shoots, multiple problems in the process, and many more.”
“Can I come from tomorrow?” - he asked.
Haha. He was asking me to come to Faded Films office.
I had this spark when I started and I couldn’t say no.
Yes, kal se aajao (You can start from tomorrow), I said.
Many people are willing to enter the photography and videography industry. Being in the industry for some time, we must give the right guidance to the best of our knowledge depending on the situation of the person.
Relations > Transactions. I hope to see more spark from the beginners :)
