Sawai Man Singh II ushered Jaipur into the modern age. First, as a Maharaja, and then as a legislator!
A Statesman was not his only introduction, He was especially noted as an enthusiastic polo player, winning among other trophies the World Cup in 1933.
~
It is unfortunate to recount that he passed away after an accident he met with while indulged in his favourite sport in 1970 in Cirencester, UK.

...That's why we have the Museum, to remind us of how we came, and why: to start fresh, and begin a new place from what we had learned and carried from the old. ~ Lois Lowry, Messenger

The Museum building was to be seen by architectural craftsmen as a sort of three-dimensional Jeypore Portfolio.

As Hendley explained, 'Jeypore has always been famous throughout North India for the beauty of its carving in stone; but as the architect relied upon this feature for the chief ornamentation of his building, it has not been thought necessary to illustrate this local art, but rather to direct the visitor's attention to the principal decorative examples in the edifice itself.'

The fabric of the building itself contributed to this end by representing the architectural skills that could not be accommodated within the displays. The endeavour was to make the walls themselves a Museum, by taking advantage of many of the beautiful designs in old buildings near Delhi and Agra and elsewhere.

Real museums are places where Time is transformed into Space. ~ Orhan Pamuk

The design and construction of the was superintended by Sir Swinton Jacob (of the Jeypore Portfolio fame) and Mir Tujumoul Hoosein, an overseer within the department, acted as 'supervisor'. They were assisted by the draughtsmen Ram Baksh, Shankar Lal and Chote Lal, and by the mistris (masons) Chander and Tara.

We write superintend, and not design, because at the height of the construction process, during 1883 and 1884, according to the state PWD's annual reports, the workforce included nearly 50 masons, between three and four times that number of stonecutters, over 100 beldars (less skilled stoneworkers and specialists in cement), 68 coolies (porters) and eight stone polishers.

The distinctions made in these lists indicate the continuation of the indigenous approach to building construction. As against a post-Renaissance European method, by which a single designer-architect determines the overall design and its detailing on paper before handing it to the building specialists to execute, the pre-modern Indian system was more collaborative, and the responsibility for the design was shared. Thus the 50 or so 'masons' who executed the detailed stonework on the Albert Hall also determined what they were carving; they were the designers of the motifs they made.

Now that we think back, as children, we were often taken to the City Zoo in Ram Niwas Gardens. And we sure stood awed in front of this sublime exponent of the Indo-Saracenic style architecture, never comprehending the lasting impact it would leave on our tender psyche.

The Museum has an assortment of rare articles on its display including textiles, carpets, paintings, metal and wood crafts, pottery, arms and weapons, flora and fauna of the state, toys, dolls and even an Egyptian mummy that belongs to the Ptolemaic Epoch. The last fact was the most fascinating to us when younger!

It puts on show the miniature paintings of a number of sub-schools of Rajasthan, and is known for housing the famous carpet, which portrays the scene of a Persian garden with running water streams that was bought at a dear price from Shah Abbas of Persia, by Mirza Raja Jai Singh I.
