The festival of Diwali has many meanings and varies between sects and religions, but to many the lighting of firecrackers and sparklers 🧨 is a sign to the gods that humans on the earth are joyful.

A woman of the Bishnoi community in rural Rajasthan. The Bishnoi are a sect of Hinduism close to a million strong. They follow 29 precepts laid out by Guru Jambeshwar in 1485, including not felling living trees, not killing animals, and compassion for all living creatures. They are some of the first eco-warriors.

We were invited into this home and I had to make several portraits of the mother of the house. She was not shy. I love the red cast of her veil.

Graduates of the sewing center at in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. “Sambhali” means “strengthening of the deprived” in Hindi, and this NGO equips marginalized women with skills and education to develop financial independence. Eagle hunter’s beloved bird held aloft in front of the Altai Mountains. Although a fully grown golden eagle may only weigh around 12 pounds/5.5 kilos, her grip is more than ten times stronger than a human hand. It’s unlikely she will ever clamp down full strength on anything but prey, but the eagle hunters rely on the bialai, leather gloves, for protection.

The Black Church at Búdir in Iceland - Búdakirkja - is one of the most photographed places in a country that abounds with beauty. It’s so simple, lovely, and minimal in the presence of overwhelming natural beauty that it’s hard to resist......So much so that when we arrived in a Jeep there were, no kidding, three huge tour buses parked in front. I looked hard for an alternate perspective and shot from the church’s graveyard. Just in case you have not seen it enough there’s a straight shot at #2.
No tourists were Photoshopped in the making of this image 😉which is a minor miracle.
The history of the church is fascinating: built in 1703, it fell into ruin until, rumor has it, in 1848 Steinunn Sveinsdóttir had a dream that the original architect asked her to rebuild it...and so she did. @ Buðir Black Church

One of the most beautiful sights in Jodhpur is Toorji Ka Jhalra or Toorji's Stepwell, built by the Maharani around 1740. Yes...this was a well and women walked these thousands of steps (it's a 200 foot drop top to bottom) to collect water. It's usually very crowded, but I went down at sunrise on my last day in India. Imagine my delight when this beautifully dressed couple wanders into my frame.
