Focus Kalimpong FocusKalimpong was established in the year 2011. Some of us thought there was a dire need for a group to promote and educate photography in hills. Gurung .

Some of us thought there was a dire need for a group to discuss and promote Photography in hills . We held our first Photo Exhibition cm Sales to celebrate World Photography Day on August 19, 20 and 21, 2011 at the Ramkrishna Rangmanch, Kalimpong. A Photography Contest for Amateur Photographers of Kalimpong was held in November 2011 and the Prize Winning Exhibits along with 50 of the best entries

was exhibited at Dukhanivarak Sangh,Kalimpong. Photos Exhibited at Ramkrishna Rangmanch Kalimpong on invitation of Organising Committee, Tea-Tourism festival, Kalimpong on 1 February 2012

Photo Exhibition cm Sales was held at TRC (Tourism Reception Centre), Kalimpong 17, 18, 19 and 20 August 2012 on WPD. We invited three young photographers of Kalimpong, Ms. Priyanka Khati, Mr. Kunal Ghatani & Mr. Bishan Tirva to exhibit their photographs during this Exhibition. FocusKalimpong was invited to set up Permanent Photo Exhibition at Science Centre by Curator, Dr. B.B. Exhibit set up and was officially opened by Dr. Harka Bahadur Chettri, MLA, Kalimpong, on March 13th 2012. A Photo competition was organised in Association with Hotel & Restaurant Association of Kalimpong (HORAK). The theme VISIT KALIMPONG THROUGHOUT THE YEAR was chosen and entries were invited from Amateur Photographers of Kalimpong. The idea behind this Photo Competition was to invite photographs of Scenic beauty with unexplored areas in Kalimpong which could be promoted as Tourist Destinations. Prize winning Photos exhibited at TRC (Tourism Reception Centre, Kalimpong) on 2nd February 2012

Two day Workshop on Photography conducted on for amateur Photographers of Kalimpong at Science Centre, Deolo, on 1-2 Feb ,2014. Celebrating 175th year of Photography, We had our Photo Exhibition cm sale from 16th to 19th August at Sub- Divisional Library, Kalimpong.

GMP PHOTO CONTEST - 2023 is organised by FocusKalimpong in memory of the group's founding member late Ganesh Mani Pradhan.
Ganesh Mani Pradhan was born in Kalimpong on the 27th of May 1940. After the completion of his studies, he joined his family’s printing press business, and then after, started the Orchid export business in 1965. By 1975 he had gathered so much knowledge that he was invited to give lectures on Indian Orchids in Germany. In 1977, he made and registered the first orchid hybrid in India and named it Bulbophyllum Kalimpong. Over the years his knowledge of Indian orchids progressed and he was invited as a judge and lecturer at various World Orchid conferences. He was passionate about photography too, which grew from an early age. His so-called hobby became an obsession in the years to come. He was particularly fond of the flora and fauna of our region and he regularly contributed to various books and magazines all over the world.
Plantsman, Mr Ganesh Mani Pradhan’s love of life didn’t come to an end with his death. A man of great feat, Mr Ganesh had profound knowledge about Photography, Botany, Ethnobotany and birds - where he found happiness. His love for the search for knowledge enabled him to create a mini personal library wherein lay his pride which he shared with his loved ones over the years. The knowledge and experience he had gathered, earned great respect and appreciation from people all around the globe.

The Participant:

2. Entries should be the original work of the participant who has captured the photos and owns the rights to the images. It is the responsibility of each participant to ensure all submissions do not infringe the copyright, trademark, moral rights, rights of privacy/publicity or intellectual property rights of any other person or entity, and that no other party has the right, title or claim of, or any interest in the images.
3. By submission of an entry, the participant agrees to abide by the rules and regulations mentioned here.

Photo:
*Photos must be in JPEG or JPG format. The images can be in colour or black and white.
* Photos must be of 300 dpi resolution and printable up to 24” x 36” inch in size.
* Submitted photos must be original, created and/or taken by the contestant - no copyrighted images may be used.
* Photos must not have any borders or film edges, names, personal logos or watermarks.
* Photos must be taken in Darjeeling hills and Sikkim and should not be more than five years prior to the beginning date of the contest (10th July 2022).
* Mobile phone, Drone, and Panorama photography will not be accepted.
* Each contestant may submit up to a maximum of 2 photographs for the competition.
* Shortlisted participants will need to submit a raw or high-resolution image for authentication and printing for exhibition.
The top 30 photographs will be exhibited on WORLD PHOTOGRAPHY DAY on 17-18th September 2022 at CafeKalimpong, Kalimpong.
* FocusKalimpong reserves the right to assess and disregard any submitted photo at its discretion.

VISUAL STORYTELLING WORKSHOP 2019

In collaboration with Focus Kalimpong we recently completed a week long visual storytelling workshop where 9 photographers participated and worked on their individual photo story. By the end of the workshop they had a pop-up exhibition and a slideshow presentation of all the work.

INTRODUCTION TO
VISUAL STORYTELLING

This intensive eight-day workshop is designed for photographers who have a technical base in digital photography and now want to take their skills to the next level. The workshop will introduce photographers to working on narratives and telling stories. Participants will be introduced to different visual styles and languages and work to produce one body of work in the duration of the workshop.
Participants must be prepared to work hard and push their limits!

The course will cover the following:
– Introduction to visual storytelling
– Aesthetics
– Composition and content
– Light – Ethics in photography
– Visual styles – Digital workflow and post-production (Bridge, Photoshop) – Introduction to editing – Note taking, research, and caption writing

ABOUT MENTORS:
Sagar Chhetri (b. 1990), is a documentary photographer based in Kathmandu. He is interested in socio-political stories. He graduated in the International Photography Program at the Pathshala South Asian Media Institute, Dhaka. He received a scholarship from the Danish Ministry of Education to attend a semester on Photojournalism in Danish School of media and Journalism, Aarhus, Denmark. He is currently associated with, a learning platform for Nepali photographers, Nepal Picture Library, a digital photo archive that strives to document an inclusive and alternate history of the Nepali people and Photo Kathmandu, Nepal’s only international photography festival. He is the recipient of Magnum Foundation Grant 2018.

Bunu Dhungana discovered photography after leaving the world of academics and research. However, her background in sociology informs her photographic work. A graduate of JNU, Delhi, she is interested in questioning notions of gender and patriarchy. While she focuses on personal projects that center around women’s issues, she has worked within a wide range – from visual ethnography, NGO/INGO work to commercial work. She loves roaming about places, people-watching, and eavesdropping. She lives and works in Kathmandu, Nepal.

This intensive eight-day workshop is designed for photographers who have a technical base in digital photography and now want to take their skills to the next level. Using Photography as the medium, the team of would like to share the daily life styles and stories of our people and our land.
For this purpose, we bring to you- "Everydaykalimpong photo contest.
The contest is simple
First, follow on Instagram
Post a photo of Kalimpong and hash tag -

From all the entries that we get, we will select one image everyday and post it as photo of the day.
At the end of the month, the winner will be chosen by a guest artist.
We will open entries from the 1st of February and close on the last day of February.
For the month of February, the winner will receive a special food voucher from worth Rs. 500.
