Senti-Mental (60"x60"), contemporary Indian photographer Abul Kalam Azad’s mesmerizing, kaleidoscope-esque visuals created were using a combination of traditional and modern photography.

A bold, expressive, and innovative printmaker, Abul Kalam Azad’s unique style involves deliberate scratching, doodling, and stitching on negatives and photographic prints. Infact, multiple exposures, mirror imaging, mixed media works etc. formed part of his pioneering photo-art experiments.

Senti-Mental, a series of more than 100 images, done during the period 2005 – 2010, belongs to this genre. In Senti-Mental, mirror reflections create an image/print in multiple dimensions, adding a surreal feel to the sober, distant traditional found negatives and prints. Through Senti-Mental series, these discarded bromide prints have received a new lease of life and have become a mirror image of that time, space and memory. What we see is the blending of black & white with colors, the marriage of tradition with modernity; a kaleidoscopic view of life, history and time.

Cochin Dockland | Abul Kalam Azad Photography | 2010

This image was shot by Indian photographer Abul Kalam Azad using a simple, inexpensive, toy film camera (Lomography). Quoting Abul, “In 2010, I decided to move out of my home town in Kochin Island, Kerala. My studio Mayalokam was based in the busy ancient market of Mattancherry. I was going through a personal and professional transition period, and I left behind my expensive cameras, light equipment, etc. I started using very basic handy cameras, such as small pinhole plastic cameras and films, mobile phones, etc. to continue my photographic practice. Cochin Dockland was shot during my last days in my town. Most of them were shot during my sleepless nights. Late hours, the busiest market becomes tranquil and still. The out of focus, blur, and natural lighting, narrates the mood and tranquility.”

Pandemic Dreams | Abul Kalam Azad Photography | 2020-21

For almost two years, the pandemic disrupted almost every aspect our everyday life, pushing us into situations and spaces that we never ever had thought of… the catastrophic change it brought in our each of our lives is unimaginable. We all had our own ways to cope with this situation that was forced upon us. Photographer Abul Kalam Azad, having to confine within the 4 walls, used the “lockdown” period to create a large body of work broadly titled, Pandemic Dreams.

Quoting Abul, “Memories and dreams always clash with each other. The line separating reality and the imagined interpretation of reality is thin and obscure. Our times force one to be in war with oneself or one another. The unfolding violence and fear makes one freeze, or respond and react with equal vigor and power. There is no exit or escape from this catastrophe. In-between this polemic duality, I reach within myself to create art. I wish to protect my memories and blossoming dreams. Blurry visions of the past and future connect the missing dots and pixels of collective histories. In ambiguous wakefulness, similar to seeing the world through my viewfinder, I am half opened and half closed. I willingly violate the pure surface of my prints. The noises, silence, abstractions, distortions, scratches and over-indulgence are ways to re-interpret realities, anger and anxieties. Through erasing of information by removing or re-arranging geographical locations, colors, objects and symbolisms, I attempt to re-imagine identities and territories.”
