Last year, I visited Schynige Platte, a mountain ridge in the Swiss Alps. It is about 2000 meters above sea level and is known for its stunning panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys, as well as its Alpine Garden, which showcases a wide variety of alpine plants and flowers that are native to the area.
How to reach:
Schynige Platte is accessible by a cogwheel train from the town of Wilderswil, which is located about 10 minutes by train from Interlaken. The cogwheel train takes approximately 50 minutes to reach the summit. This is a unique mode of transportation that allows the train to climb steep gradients, making it perfect for mountain travel. The train ride up was breathtaking. As we climbed higher, the views got more and more stunning. We passed by meadows and forests, and the higher we got, the more expansive the view became. The train ride took about an hour, but it went by in a flash because there was so much to see.
Activities to do:
Once you reach the summit, there are several hiking trails to explore ranging in difficulty, or simply enjoy the view while dining at the restaurant. It's important to note that the train only operates during certain months of the year, typically from late May to late October, so it's best to check the train schedule before planning your trip.
It was a sunny clear morning and the panoramic view was truly awe-inspiring, and we could see for miles in every direction.
For those who love hiking, Schynige Platte has several hiking trails that offer even more stunning views of the Alps. The trails are well-marked and vary in difficulty, so there's something for everyone.
Restaurant:
There is a restaurant to refuel. You can enjoy some traditional Swiss cuisine, such as cheese fondue or rösti while taking in the incredible view.
Finally, I would definitely recommend visiting Schynige Platte if you have the opportunity. Schynige Platte is a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of city life and is a great way to experience the natural beauty of Switzerland.
