Nabanna is a traditional rice or cake festival in Bangladesh and West Bengal, India. Nabanna is one of the ceremonies and festivals celebrated at different stages of grain production in the agrarian society of Bengal. The word "nabanna" means "new food". Nabanna Utsav is a festival organized on the occasion of the first cooking of rice prepared from new aman paddy. This festival is usually held after the ripening of aman paddy in the month of Agrahayan. Somewhere in the month of Magh there is a tradition of celebrating Nabanna. At the Navanna ceremony, new food is offered to the ancestors, gods, crows, etc., and after serving it to the relatives, the householder and the family receive new food with new molasses. It is a special ritual to offer freshly made food items to crows. According to folklore, the food reaches the souls of the dead through crows. This offering is called "Kakbali". In the past, even on the day of Poush Sankranti, it was customary to offer Navanna to the house deity.
