Most people picture India from above — the mountains, the cities, the coastline. Far fewer picture what's underneath it.

There are five names worth knowing before you plan a dive trip here: the Andamans, Lakshadweep, Goa and Puducherry. Fout completely different worlds — island reefs, an offshore pinnacle rising straight out of open water, and quieter stretches of coast that rarely make the highlight reels.

These four have been sitting on my own list for a while. So consider this a starting map: where each site is, and what makes it its own kind of dive. Not a ranking. Not the full list. Just the four worth knowing first.

India's EEZ covers over 2.3 million km² of ocean.

The Exclusive Economic Zone: the waters where India holds sovereign rights to explore, exploit, conserve and manage its own resources.

It's the 18th largest in the world — bigger than the entire land area of all but a handful of countries.

Inside it: coral systems from the Gulf of Mannar to the Andamans, the world's largest mangrove forest, and the Arabian Sea humpback whale — the only humpback population on Earth that doesn't migrate. Fewer than 100 left. Isolated for 70,000 years.

Beyond it, in the Central Indian Ocean Basin, India holds international seabed contracts for polymetallic nodules.

And 28 million Indians depend on fisheries for their livelihood.

The OECD projects the global ocean economy will reach $3 trillion by 2030. India's share of that, managed well, could be transformative.

India has the assets. What it doesn't yet have is ocean policy operating at the same scale.

That's the conversation Ocean Evoke is joining. It isn't a small one.

Andaman waters have had some extraordinary encounters with thresher sharks.

Threshers are generally associated with deeper waters and are not commonly encountered by recreational divers, which makes sightings like these especially memorable.

I’ve heard stories from divers who have encountered them in Indian waters — the kind of encounter that changes what you think is possible beneath the surface.

I didn't start building Ocean Evoke because I'd explored India's waters.

I started because I'd spent years exploring everyone else's.

Indonesia. Australia. Palau. Costa Rica. The Philippines.

And the more I dived, the more I saw what was happening beneath the surface — bleaching reefs, disappearing marine life, damaged habitats.

Eventually, I started asking: what's happening back home?

That's when I knew I wanted to build in India.

I want to help more people see what is here — and why it deserves our attention.

That's why Ocean Evoke | Ocean Conservation India exists.

One life. Gotta do both.

Some nights, I'm in a crowd with the music turned all the way up.

Other days, I'm underwater, watching a reef come alive around me.

I don't really see those as two different lives. Adventure is adventure — whether it's 40 metres down or standing in front of a stage.

And somewhere along the way, exploring the Ocean became more than something I enjoyed. It became something I genuinely care about protecting.

I'll take both. 🌊🎶
