A city that doesn’t just celebrate the goddess — it creates art out of faith.
Chandannagar’s Jagadhatri Pujo is one of Bengal’s most iconic and visually spectacular festivals. It is believed to have started in the mid-1800s, during the time when Chandannagar was a French colony. The festival gained prominence under Indranarayan Chowdhury, a local zamindar, who initiated the grand worship of the goddess Jagadhatri — a form of Durga symbolizing victory over ego and darkness.
Over time, the pujo evolved into a dazzling celebration of artistry, with elaborate pandals, mesmerizing lighting displays, and intricate idols that reflect both French elegance and Bengali devotion. Today, Chandannagar’s lights during Jagadhatri Pujo are world-renowned, rivaling even Kolkata’s Durga Puja spectacle.
