Hidden within the misty, moss-covered oak and bamboo forests of Lepchajagat lies one of the Eastern Himalayas’ most elusive ground-dwellers: the Hill Partridge (Arborophila torqueola). 🪵✨
Often heard before they are seen, these shy, sulking birds are famous for their constant, hen-like contact calls as they meticulously scratch through the damp leaf litter in search of seeds and small invertebrates.
✨ Species Spotlight: The Hill Partridge
Distinctive Looks: The males are remarkably ornate, sporting a vibrant orange crown and face contrasted by a bold black head and streaked white-and-black "necklace." The females are masters of camouflage, featuring subtle, elegant ginger-brown and grey markings.
Habitat: They thrive in high-altitude, dense montane forests, typically found at elevations between 1,500m and 3,000m.
Behavior: Highly terrestrial and strictly diurnal, they move quietly in pairs or small family groups, darting quickly into thick bamboo underbrush the moment they sense movement.
