The American flamingo chick (Phoenicopterus ruber) is born with a soft light gray or white plumage, very different from the pink plumage of adults. Her beak is straight and her legs are short and pink. Despite its size, it is born with its eyes open and shows advanced development: it is a precocious species, able to stand upright and walk a few hours after hatching.
In the early days it remains in the nest, but soon incorporates into a nursery, where it is grouped with other chicks under adult supervision. This early integration favours their physical and social development. His nutrition depends entirely on his parents, who supply him with a secretion rich in fats and proteins fundamental for his growth.
One of her most important features is her vocalization. From inside the egg, the chick emits sounds that allow it to establish a sonic bond with its parents. After birth, their name becomes unique and recognizable, acting as an “acoustic signature” that allows parents to identify their offspring among hundreds or thousands in the colony. This communication is reinforced with visual cues and various behaviors.
As it grows, the beak begins to bend, the legs lengthen and take on a black tone, its fluffy and soft plumage takes on a dark grayish color and becomes a bit more rough. These adaptations (early mobility, vocal recognition, and specialized feeding) reflect Flamenco's high specialization in colonial settings and parental cooperation as a strategy for reproductive success.
