Girish Menon

Girish Menon I help people find joy through photography 💕 My uncle Philip gifted me a Canon AE-1P camera on my 17th birthday. Here all we did was “point and shoot”.

I immediately loaded the camera and started clicking anything and everything in sight. Imagine my disillusionment and the horrific look on my face when I saw the developed prints which were nothing like the pictures which I had thought I had taken. All the photos were either too dark (underexposed) or too bright (overexposed) or out of focus. That’s when I realised that I needed to take a course i

n photography to learn the basic skills of taking good pictures. I enrolled for a photography class that was held in a dimly lit claustrophobic room with no windows. During the first session, I wondered how we were going to shoot in that poorly lit environment. Sadly, we had no practical photo shoot session until the 7th class on which we were taken to the Vasai Fort for an outdoor photo shoot. On the 8th session, we were given a demo on how to develop our film and print our photos. And that was it! I had invested time, money and energy and I had learnt almost nothing on how to click good pictures. So I decided to join a year-long one on one class with a renowned photographer. During this course, I started clicking good professional pictures, getting them published in various magazines... and getting paid for it! I then decided to share my new knowledge with budding photo enthusiasts so that they too did not have to go through a similar traumatic experience. So in 2007, I started teaching photography workshops at various venues in Mumbai. I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to teach photography to over 15,000 individuals between the ages of 8 and 85. In addition to these individuals, I have taught photography workshops at schools and colleges such as American School of Bombay, VIBGYOR, Witty International, Bishop's School, IIT of Bombay, Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies, S.M. Shetty College and Anna Leela College, and for organisations such as ICICI Foundation, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS), and NABARD etc.

I was a visiting faculty for photography at SNDT Women’s University in Mumbai, where I taught “Lighting and digital photography” to first and second year BSc. Home Science students.

I used a Canon 7D Mark II to click this leopard photo at Panna National Park. Leopard photos are fun to click, especially since open sightings of leopards are rare in jungles. I was overt he moon with joy when I clicked this leopard photo. This was one of my first outings with the Canon 7D Mark II camera and the 100-400mm IS II lens. This was my first leopard sighting in a jungle. It was at a wildlife safari in Madhya Pradesh.
